Leeuwenhoek Made
first microscope
Observed tiny
creatures that movedhe called them
“Animicules”- now
known as bacteria
• All life is made of cells
• Discovered after microscope invented
• 1665: Robert Hooke first observed cork (dead
plant bark)
– Cork reminded him of tiny rooms
• He named the empty boxes “cells”
CELLS
• The Invention of
the microscope
made it possible for
people to discover
and learn about
cells
• Three Parts:
– 1) All organisms are made
of one or more cells
– 2) Cells are the basic unit
of structure and function
– 3) All Cells come from
cells that already exist.
• What’s the big problem
with this theory?
• 1838-Concluded
that all plants are
made up of cells
• 1855-concluded
that all animals are
made up of cells
• Concluded that all
cells come from
other cells
• 1) Prokaryote: Pro-Before Karyote-nucleus
• No membrane around nucleus
• Oldest cells known (~4 billion years old)
– Believed to have evolved first (oldest fossils)
– AKA: Bacteria
• 2) Eukaryote: Cells with a
nucleus & membrane
bound organelles
• Have a membrane around
the nucleus
– More complex cells
– Evolved from
prokaryotes
– Ex: Protists, Fungi,
Plants, Animals
• Living things are organized into one of 6 kingdoms.
• A Kingdom is a large group that shares some similar
characteristics
• The 6 Kingdoms are: Archeobacteria
Eubacteria
Protists
Fungi
Plants
Animals
Quick
Review
• Cells shape is
related to its job
(function)
• Cells are the basic
units of life
