Chapter 18 – Classification
18.3 Building the Tree of Life
18.3 – Building the Tree of Life
Three Domains
DNA evidence proved that bacteria and archaea are
very different so scientists created domains.
Domains are a larger more inclusive taxon than a
kingdom.
Three domains of life –
Three Domains
Bacteria
Archaea
Eukarya
Prokaryotic
Eukaryotic
18.3 – Building the Tree of Life
Domain Archaea
Members of the domain Archaea are:
unicellular and prokaryotic
live in extreme environments
 Different cell structures than domain
Bacteria
 Corresponds to the kingdom
Archeabacteria

Domain Bacteria
Members of the domain Bacteria are:
Unicellular
Prokaryotic
Different cell structures than Domain
Archaea
 Corresponds to the kingdom
Eubacteria
18.3 – Building the Tree of Life
Domain Eukarya
The domain Eukarya consists of all organisms
that:
Are eukaryotic (have a nucleus)
Includes the kingdoms Protista, Fungi, Plantae,
and Animalia.

Modern Day Kingdoms
Six Kingdom system of classification:
Eubacteria,
Archaeabacteria
Protista
Fungi
Plantae
Animalia
 Two kingdom system during Linnaeus's time!
 Plant or Animal
18.3 – Building the Tree of Life
Changing Ideas About Kingdoms
Kingdoms have changes quite a bit overtime.
18.3 – Building the Tree of Life
3 Domains and 6 Kindgoms
Draw a simple concept map that shows the 3 domains
and 6 kingdoms that are currently used in biological
classification
18.3 – Building the Tree of Life
The Tree of All Life
The tree of life represents the current hypotheses
regarding evolutionary relationships among the taxa
within the three domains of life.
18.3 – Building the Tree of Life
The Tree of All Life
Modern evolutionary classification is working
towards the goal of presenting all life on a
single evolutionary tree.
The tree of life displays current evolutionary
relationships among the taxa within the three
domains of life.
