How to use the internet safely, effectively,
responsibly and resourcefully…
Why should students learn how
to use the Internet?
There are three essential skills students gain by learning to use the
Internet:
1. Communicating
2. Researching
3. Problem-solving
These skills can be taught without the Internet, but most businesses
apply these skills through telecommunication systems like the
Internet.
When students use technology, they show positive gains in achievement on
researcher constructed tests, standardized tests, and national tests (Milken
Exchange on Educational Technology)
7 things you should know before using the
internet:
1.
All students (and parents) must sign an AUP
(Acceptable Use Policy). The AUP spells out
exactly what Internet activities are allowed.
2. Students should never be left alone when using
the Internet at school. Supervision is required.
3. Students should alert the teacher or librarian
immediately if they encounter an inappropriate
site. Encountering an inappropriate site can
happen; problems arise if a student lingers at
the site without alerting the teacher.

4. Students are not allowed to download large
files, such as MP3's. It reduces the bandwidth
for everyone trying to use the Internet.
5. Students should never give out their personal
information on the Internet.
6. Students are not allowed to enter chat rooms
or participate in online game playing.
7. Internet use is a privilege, not a right. The
privilege can be taken away for inappropriate
use.

Why???

Anyone can publish anything on the web…

Hard to determine web pages’ authorship…

Even if signed, qualifications are given…

Sponsorship is usually not indicated…
Objectivity
Why is the page on the web? Is it to
inform, give the facts or data?
 Is the page actually an ad disguised as
information?
 Is the page designed to sway opinion?
 What are the intentions behind the
page?



Goals of the sponsors/authors aren’t
clearly stated…

Web often serves as a “soapbox”
Accuracy
Where did the author get the
information?
 Is the information reliable and error
free?
 If there are links to other sources, are
they reliable?
 Is there a list of resources or a
bibliography?

Why???
Anyone can publish anything on the
Web…
 Web resources are rarely fact
checked…
 No web standards currently exist to
ensure accuracy…

Currency
Is the page dated?
 Is it current enough?
 Undated information is no better than
anonymous information.

Coverage
What does this page offer that is not
found elsewhere?
 How in-depth is the material?
 Is this resource comprehensive or
selective?
 Why is the information useful?

Apply the 5 W’s prior to using a webpage as a
resource:
Who wrote the page and are they an
expert?
 Where does the information come from?
 What is the purpose of the site?
 When was the site created or updated?
 Why is the information useful to their
research?


 Next part of the address is the name of
the computer or the “server” (the Big
