ANS 310 Genetics of Livestock Improvement Course Syllabus: Spring 2013 MWF 8-8:50 am Rm: AGIT 255 Instructor: Dr. Aaron Cooper, Assistant Professor in Agricultural Sciences Office Location: 247 Office Hours: MWF 1-5pm Office Phone: 886-5676 Office Fax: 886-5990 University Email Address: [email protected] COURSE INFORMATION Materials – Textbook: Not required, however references can be made to Bourdon, Understanding Animal Breeding, 2nd Ed., Prentice Hall. Course Description: A comprehensive review of animal breeding and genetics of domestic animals and livestock. Student Learning Outcomes: To learn important concepts and practices of animal breeding and genetics of domestic animals in depth that can be of practical use to the student. Student progress will be evaluated by exams and homework assignments over course content that demonstrate the student’s ability to quantitative reason, problem solve, and analytically write findings and/or answers. COURSE REQUIREMENTS Lecture: Consists of three 1-hr exams, a comprehensive final exam, and homework assignments. If you miss a lecture exam due to an excused absence (as defined by University Regulations) arrangements MUST be made in ADVANCE with Dr. Cooper to take the exam. Homework assignments will be handed out and turned back in a week later during class. If the student fails to turn in homework on time it is considered late (30 pt deduction) and will only be accepted up to one week later for credit. Students with a University excused absence will be given a one week extension to turn in homework at end of excused absence period for full credit. After which it will be considered late (30 pt deduction) and will only be accepted up to one week later from that point in time for credit. Attendance: Seating assignments will be used to record your attendance. Those students with no more than one unexcused absence will be able to opt out of the final exam and eligible for a 2 pt curve. Grading: Three exams, a comprehensive final, and thirteen homeworks will be the responsibility of the student. A scale of A = 90-100%, B = 80-89%, C = 70-79%, D = 60-69%, F = < 60% will be utilized.
