Professor Tony Kavanagh SHORT CV BSc (Botany), 1st Class Honours, University College Dublin, 1979 PhD in Plant Molecular Biology, University College Dublin, 1984 Professor of Molecular Genetics (2002- ) Head of Department, Smurfit Institute of Genetics, TCD (2003-2006) RESEARCH INTERESTS (1) Understanding the role of the DREB (Drought Response Element Binding) transcription factor family in adaptations to drought (and drought tolerance) in plants. (2) Plant biotechnology, with a focus on molecular pharming i.e. engineering plants for high-level expression of recombinant therapeutic proteins (e.g. antigens and antibodies); and metabolite pathway engineering e.g. the betalain pathway (3) Development of inducible expression systems for transgene expression in higher plant chloroplasts (transplastomic plants).
