I. Gene – a heritable factor that consists of a length on
DNA and influences a specific characteristic
A. Found at a particular locus on a
chromosome.
B. Alleles – versions of a gene (variation in one –
a few bases) that code for different expressions
of genes
C. Mutation – change in one or more bases in a
gene (create different alleles)
1. Base Substitution Mutation – one nucleotide
of DNA replaced by a different one (ex. T goes
where there should be an A)
