The Effect of Exercise on
O2 Consumption and CO2
Production
Effect of Exercise on 02 Consumption and CO2 Production
Design Outline
Hypothesis: Increased exercise/work will increase CO2 exhaled
IV: Amount of exercise
Levels of IV: recline, walking, stepping, high exercise (mostly
anaerobic)
Trials:
27
27
27
27
DV: Amount of CO2 exhaled (micromoles) and pulse (bpm)
Constants: time exercised, time breathing, amount of H2O
Focus Questions:
What’s the relationship between workload, pulse and CO2 production?
Why do different people produce different CO2 levels with the same
workload?
Effect of Exercise on 02 Consumption and CO2 Production
Lab Chemistry – CO2 makes acid
•
CO2 + H2O H2CO3 (acid)
•
H2CO3  HCO3- + H+
•
H+ determines pH (H+ = pH-- more acidic )
Effect of Exercise on 02 Consumption and CO2 Production
Lab Chemistry– Neutralizing the
acid by titration
•
NaOH  Na+ + OH- (base)
•
OH- + H+  H2O (acids and
bases neutralize one another).
•
With an indicator, solution will
change color when neutral.
•
Solution is neutral when volume
NaOH = volume CO2.
•
NaOH used is an accurate
measure of CO2 in the solution.

Lab Protocol – (4) Exercise
Levels
•rest-recline position-lay on floor
low exercise -walk down north hall
only
medium exercise –alternate leg step on
chairs
high exercise – push ups, jumping jack,
air squat (knee squats)
•3 minutes each
•Set-up breathing tube before you
exercise.
•Do each test in order. One partner
does all four tests, then the other
partner does all four tests.

Lab Protocol – Collecting CO2
•Breathe normally through
plastic tubing for one minute.
•Plug nose as you breathe
through tube. Be careful not to
breathe too hard and splash
water.
•Begin breathing immediately
after activity.
•Partner measures pulse for 30
seconds. (record as
beats/minute)

Lab Protocol - Titration
•
NaOH can burn-wear goggles.
•
Measure 100 ml of distilled
water with graduated cylinder.
•
Add only 3 drops of indicator!
•
Remember to record starting
position of NaOH.
•
Add NaOH slowly until it
holds color for one full minute.
