Renal abscess
• results from ascending urinary infection, often
with virulent strains of Gram-negative rods.
Infection initially involves the renal tubules
and interstitium
• haematogenous seeding from septic emboli
-intravenous drug users, immuno
compromised patients, and patients with a
known extrarenal source of infection such as
endocarditis or a skin or dental infection.
• Ultrasounds and CT scan are most helpful in
recognizing a renal abscess
• CT scan -diagnostic procedure of choice with
an accuracy of about 96 percent
