Where does cocaine (crack) come from?
• Cocaine is made from Coca leaves.
– Coca leaves are mainly found in Latin America
• It has various forms:
– Leaves, paste, powder, and freebase
How it Affects the Brain
• Cocaine is popular and delivers users pleasure because it
triggers dopamine: which is a neurotransmitter that is
present on many regions of the brain
Impact on Communities
• Cocaine abuse has affected the people who use it, and those around them.
• Those who use it feel great and powerful for a while until it wears off then they
feel worse then ever before.
• Cocaine is a very addictive and an extremely powerful drug.
When did Cocaine become a problem?
• In 1855 cocaine was extracted from coca leaves but at that
time was not used in the ways it is used today. It was used
as an anesthetic in hospitals.
• Not until 1905, cocaine became popular as a “drug”
• In 1914 cocaine was banned in the U.S. but is still used
illegally today
