Illegial Drugs
Health Risks of Drug Use
Substance abuse
 Substance Abuse: any unnecessary or improper use of
chemical substances for non medical purposes.
 Illegal Drugs: chemical substances that people of any age may
not lawfully manufacture, possess, buy or sell.
 Illicit Drug Use: the use or sale of any substance that is illegal
or otherwise not permitted.
-the crime of using illegal drugs.
-includes the sale of prescription drugs for
those who they are not intended for.
Health Risks of Drug Use
 Overdose: a strong, sometimes fatal reaction to taking a large
amount of a drug.
 Effects of Drug Use
-Tolerance
-Psychological dependence
-Physiological dependence
-Addiction
 These effects can happen with just one try.
 Cycle of Addiction: takes drug and experience a short
pleasure, drug wears off, physical and psychological
withdrawal, to relieve the symptoms take drug again.
Marijuana
A plant whose leaves, buds, and flowers are usually smoked for their
intoxicating effects.
(Grass, weed, or pot)
Gateway Drug
Unfiltered Smoke
More Cancer causing chemicals than tobacco
Health Effects of Using Marijuana
 Hallucinations
 Impaired short-term memory, reaction time, concentration,

and coordination
Decreased initiative and ambition
Bloodshot eyes, dry mouth
Lung irritation, coughing
Heart and lung damage (lung cancer)
Increased appetite
Weakened immunity to infection
Health Effects of Using Marijuana
 Interferes with sperm production, lowers testosterone levels.





(Men)
Infertility, raised testosterone levels. (Women)
Raised dopamine levels (sense of pleasure)
Anxiety
Paranoia-irrational suspiciousness or distrust of others.
Dizzy, trouble walking, can’t remember
-Short term memory affected
Sleepy
Facts
 1 in 7 have tried Marijuana by the time they graduate
 Those that start in teens more likely to be addicted
Inhalants
Substances whose
fumes are sniffed or
inhaled to give effect.
Inhalants
• Some are prescribed by doctors to treat allergies,
asthma, or other medical conditions.
• Sniffed to get High
• Depress the central nervous system.
• Glassy Stair, slurred speech, impaired judgment,
nausea, coughing, nose bleeds, fatigue and lack
or coordination.
• Loose Brain cells, liver/kidney damage,
blindness, brain damage, paralysis, cardiac
arrest and death.
Anabolic = muscle building
Androgenic = increased male
characteristics
Can be used for medical condition
Result in Unnatural muscle growth
Anabolic-Androgenic Steroids
 Tendons and ligaments don’t strengthen, which
leads to injury.
 Other side effects- weight gain, acne, high blood
pressure, liver and kidney tumors.
 Roid Rage: violent behavior, extreme mood swings,
depression, and paranoia.
 Shrinking testicles, reduced sperm count,
baldness, menstrual cycle changes, and deepened
voice.
Chemicals that affect the central
nervous system and alter activity in the
brain.
Four Main Groups:
-Stimulants
-Depressants
-Opiates
-Hallucinogens
Stimulants: Drugs that speed up the central nervous
system.
Depressants: (sedatives) drugs that tend to slow the
central nervous system.
Opiates: (Narcotics) drugs such as those derived from
the opium plant that are obtainable only by prescription
and are used to relieve pain.
Hallucinogens: drugs that alter moods, thoughts, and
sense perceptions, including vision, hearing, smell, and
touch.
What Are Club Drugs?
• drugs found at concerts, dance clubs, and drug parties called raves.
• List a few that you have heard of…..
Stimulants
• Drugs that speed up the CNS.
Stimulants
Amphetamines
• Highly addictive
• Used to stay alert, athletic performance, or to lose weight
• Easy to develop tolerance
• Regular use can result in irregular HR, paranoia, aggression, or
heart failure
• Decreased appetite, weight loss, malnutrition
Cocaine
• Rapidly acting, powerful, addictive, and Illegal
• White powder of coca plant leaves, causes confidence and euphoria
• Depression, fatigue, paranoia, dependence, malnutrition ,cardiac
problems, and death
Stimulants
Crack
• Extremely dangerous form of cocaine (rock)
• Reaches brain quickly, HR and BP go to dangerous levels,
death from cardiac or respiratory failure
• Mixing with alcohol or other drugs=fatal
Methamphetamine
• Meth, white odorless powder, produced in makeshift labs
• Short term feeling of euphoria, depression, paranoia, and
delusions. Can cause death
• Memory loss, heart and nerve damage
• Increased tolerance and addiction
Before and After on Meth
Depressants
• Drugs that tend to slow the CNS
• Slow Heart and Respiration, lower BP
• Combining small amounts of depressants can cause shallow
breathing, weak or rapid pulse, coma, and death
Depressants
Barbiturates
• Sedatives rarely used for medical purposes.
• Mood changes, excessive sleepiness, and coma
• Fatigue, confusion, impaired muscle coordination, reduced
HR, BP, respiratory function, death
• Combinations with other drugs or alcohol can be fatal
Tranquilizers
• Relieve anxiety, muscle spasms, sleeplessness, and
nervousness.
• Depression, fever, irritability, loss of judgment, dizziness
• Dependence, coma, death
Depressants
Rohypnol (roofies)
• Decreased BP, drowsiness, memory loss,
gastrointestinal disturbances.
GHB
• Drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, loss of
consciousness
• Impaired breathing, coma, death
Hallucinogens
• Overload the Brains sensory controls
• Cause serious mental/emotional and physical consequences for
users.
• Alter mood, and impair judgment, thoughts, and sense perception.
• Hallucinations, confusion, intensified sensations
• Have feelings of invincibility
• Increases in Heart and respiratory rates. Heart Failure and coma
• Are not used for any medical purpose.
Hallucinogens
PCP / Angel Dust
• Most dangerous of all drugs because how much it varies from one user to
another.
• Distorted sense of time, increased muscle strength, feelings of violence, and
inability to feel pain.
• Loss of appetite, depression, panic, aggression, violent actions.
• PCP-related deaths are caused by the destructive behavior or disorientation
the drug causes.
DXM / “tussin”
• Cough suppressant
• Hallucinations, paranoia, panic attacks, nausea, increased HR and BP, seizures,
and addiction
• Nausea, dizziness, lack of coordination, rashes
Hallucinogens
(Psilocybin) Mushrooms
• Delusions, illusions, hallucinations,
paranoia, extreme anxiety, nausea
(Mescaline) Peyote Cactus
• Delusions, illusions, hallucinations,
flashbacks, numbness, tremors
Hallucinogens
Ecstasy (MDMA)
• short term euphoria: a feeling of intense well-being
or elation.
• Confusion, depression, paranoia, muscle breakdown
LSD (Acids)
• Distorted perceptions of sound and color, flashbacks,
euphoria, panic, terror or depression, numbness,
tremors
Opiates/Narcotics
• drugs such as those derived from the opium plant that are
obtainable only by prescription and are used to relieve pain.
• misuse dulls the senses, causes drowsiness, constipation, slow and
shallow breathing, convulsions, coma, and death.
• very addictive
Opiates
Codeine
• Dizziness, labored breathing, low BP, reduced respiratory
function, respiratory arrest, death.
• Exposure to HIV through contaminated needles, addiction
Morphine
• Used to treat pain but only for a short time
• Fast or slow HR, seizures, hallucinations, blurred vision,
rashes, difficulty swallowing
Opiates
Heroin
• injected, snorted, smoked
• Powder, tar, or mixed with other ingredients
• Slows breathing and pulse rate, infection in heart lining, liver
disease, HIV, hepatitis, coma, and death
Oxycodone
• Used to relieve chronic pain
• Drowsiness, nausea, constipation, addiction
• Reduced respiratory function, respiratory arrest, death
