Drug- Any chemical that alters any body system
Responsible Drug Use- taking the appropriate
amounts of a drug for its intended medical
purpose
Drug Misuse - taking a legal drug for their
intended purpose, but not correctly
Drug Abuse – taking legal drugs for reasons
other than those intended or using controlled
substances illegally
FDA-Food and Drug Administration - federal government
agency that monitors the safety and effectiveness of
drugs
Medicine - drugs that help cure, lessen severity, relieve
symptoms, prevent disease
Prescription – require a written medical order Pg. 406
Over the Counter Drugs - no prescription from a doctor
needed Pg. 407
Reye’s Syndrome - aspirin
Supplements - Do not need FDA approval initially Pg. 408
Drug Testing- FDA approval
Actual Testing- Done by Pharmaceutical Company with the
use of labs, animals and humans
Placebo- “sugar pill”- “drug” given with no active
ingredients
