Bureau of
Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms
This agency enforces and administers
laws covering the production,
distribution, and use of firearms,
explosives, and alcohol and tobacco
products. This agency also collects
excise taxes on the alcohol and
tobacco industries.
Internal Revenue Service
This agency collects nearly all federal
taxes, including personal and
corporate income taxes as well as
social security, excise, estate, and
gift taxes. It also enforces tax laws
and provides information to
taxpayers.
Federal Bureau of Investigation
This agency is the main investigative
division of the Department of
Justice. It is responsible for putting
together evidence, reporting facts,
and locating witnesses for federal
cases. It also carries out
fingerprint identification, laboratory
examinations, and police training.
U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services
This agency controls and facilitates the
entry of qualified persons into the
United States. It also denies
admission to unqualified aliens. This
agency promotes and carries out
the naturalization of resident aliens;
Lastly, it apprehends and removes
aliens who have entered the United
States illegally.
Census Bureau
As directed by the Constitution, this
agency takes a count of the U.S.
population every 10 years. It
collects, tabulates, and publishes a
variety of statistical information
about the people and economy of
the United States, including
agriculture, manufacturing,
population trends, employment,
and housing.
Center for Disease Control
Administers national programs for the
prevention and control of
communicable and other
preventable diseases and
implements programs for health
emergencies. Develops workplace
safety and health standards.
Conducts research and education
about smoking and health.
Medicare & Medicaid
Under the Health Care Financing
Administration, these two agencies
are health care programs. The first
agency is a health insurance
program for persons over 65 years
of age and certain disabled persons.
The other agency provides medical
services to those who can not
afford adequate medical care.
National Transportation Safety Board
This agency investigates every civil
aviation accident in the United
States and any other significant
accidents in the other modes of
transportation – railroad, highway,
marine, and pipeline. This agency
also issues safety recommendations
aimed at preventing future
accidents in the areas of
transportation.
Drug Enforcement Agency
This agency enforces laws related to
growing, manufacturing, or
distributing illegal drugs in the U.S.
It also tries to reduce the
availability of illegal drugs on the
domestic and international markets.
Federal Emergency Management
Administration
This agency is in charge of helping
people before and after a disaster.
The governor of a state must ask
for help from the President before
this agency can help. Once the
President declares an event a
disaster, emergency workers help
victims by giving supplies including
food, shelter, or even helping
businesses rebuild.
Central Intelligence Agency
This agency gives intelligence or
information about any foreign
threats to our national security.
This information is given to the
President, to the National Security
Council, and any other government
officials who make decisions about
out national security policies.
