Introduction to
The Next Generation of
Policy Insight
what does REMI say? sm
Key Features of PI+
• New user interface
• New national forecast methodology
• New state and local government final
demand equations
• Expanded consumption categories

New User Interface - Design
Goals
• Usability – A results-oriented approach that lets you
focus on your work, instead of how the software works
• Capability – Expose the power that is already present
in Policy Insight, making advanced features more
accessible for experienced and casual users alike
• Extensibility – Create a framework for developing new
features
what does REMI say? sm
Incorporates Ribbon
Approach Instead of Menus
• PI+ uses the Ribbon design, created by
Microsoft®, and first used for the 2007
release of the Microsoft Office System
what does REMI say? sm
Ribbon Advantages for PI+
• Only commands related to the current task
are shown
• Functions are easy to identify, with labels
and detailed pop-up descriptions
• Features are immediately apparent, rather
than “buried” in a fixed menu structure.

Integrates a Study Guide Within
the Structure of the Software
• The study guide integration provides a “best
practices” approach to assist in the analysis
of general and specialized scenarios.

Built-In Policy Variable
Selection Tools
• Blueprints, generally defined as “a plan of action or a guide to doing
something,” refer in PI+ to the fully interactive, guided interfaces such
as BizDev®
• Scenarios present suggested policy variables for a specific type of
analysis or project.
• Lists provide the traditional grouping by economic concept and the five
blocks in the model’s design.

Workbook Manager in PI+
• Workbooks in PI+ are more easily treated as
documents, rather than a single “big bucket” for all
of your work.
• Workbook Manager helps to preview, copy, and
make backups of workbooks for different projects
and runs of PI+.
what does REMI say? sm
Workbook Diagram
• The Diagram view, which replaces the previous
Project Manager, shows a more detailed view of
the forecasts in the current workbook, and the
relationships between them.

New Results Browser
• Results are flexible and easy to navigate, with grouping by
concept and numerous sorting, filtering and pivoting
options. Multiple chart types are available, and tables,
charts and maps can be viewed simultaneously.

New National Forecast
Methodology
• Key macroeconomic variables forecasted to
2050 using historic and BLS projected trends
within an internally consistent framework.
• Federal government military now explicitly a
column and row of the IO table.
• Technology changes in IO table now
extended to 2050.

New State and Local Government
Final Demand Equations
• Now include a response to GDP to more
accurately reflect the reality that
government budgets must be restricted to
their revenue sources, many of which are
affected by economic conditions.
• State government spending estimated
separate from local government spending
since response to changes in GDP are
statistically different.

Expanded Consumption
Categories
• The number of consumption categories have
been expanded from 13 to 79 and the
parameters were re-estimated based on this
greater detail.
