Thimbleweed
(Anemone riparia or A. virginiana)
The two species of thimbleweed which grow in Altona Forest are A. riparia and
A. virginiana.
Family: Ranunculaceae (ra-nun-kew-LAY-see-ay In the Ranunculus or
buttercup family. From the Latin rana, a frog, because this family often grows
in damp places.
Genus: Anemone (uh-NEM-oh-nee) Means wind or possibly from the
Hebrew referring to the lament for slain Adonis, whose blood produced the
red Adonis or Anemone coronaria.
Species: virginiana (vir-jin-ee-AN-uh) Means of or from Virginia and
named after Queen Elizabeth I or England.
Species: riparia – Growing near a river or stream.

Leaves - so deeply cut that
they seem to be palmately
compound with three to five
leaflets.
Flowers - long-stalked, 5
petal-like white sepals are 2
cm. wide.
Fruit - resembles a thimble,
thus the name
