About the Artist
Gladys passion is to paint using natural pigments from the plants, trees,
bark, leaves, flowers and fruits from the Amazon rainforest. She has
developed a unique technique for preparing these pigments which are
Amazingly rich in colors.
Gladys was born and grew up in Contamana a town built in at the end of
the 19th century by pioneers during the rubber boom in the Amazon region.
She graduated with honors from the Peruvian National Art School and was
awarded the Gold Medal for her scholastic performance and her unique
painting style using natural pigments. The sub-realist style of her paintings
captures the images and visions of the biodiversity and the people dwelling
in the Amazon region of Peru.
She served as the Program Director at the Chachapoyas and Pucallpa
Art Schools and was commended by students and faculty for her teaching
skills and art community activities.
She has been invited to numerous national and international art exhibits
and her paintings are in display in galleries and art centers in Peru,
Argentina, Colombia, Brazil and Egypt.
Gladys is currently developing and building the Yurmamana Ecological
Art Center (www.yurmamana.com) which is located deep in the Amazon
rainforest. The main purpose of the center is to teach the preparation and
use of natural pigments. The Art Center will have living facilities for art
students and artist from around the world interested in learning and
practicing the use of natural pigments in a natural environment.
