Nutrient Application in TPS Nursery
• Media Preparation: Sterilized garden soil + Well rotten farm yard
manure (FYM) in 1:1 ratio. Top most layer of bed (2-3 cm) is
prepared from finely sieved FYM. Total height of seed bed =10 cm.
• Sowing Depth= 0.5 cm and Distance between 2 rows = 10 cm
.
• 10 gm Nitrogen, 30 gm Phosphorous and 10 gm Potash is applied
to 100 kg of media. Out of this, 5 gm N, 8 gm P2O5 and 10 gm
K2O per square meter of bed is applied as basal dose.
• 4-5 foliar spray of 0.1% urea are given on alternate days after 15
days of sowing.
Role of Nutrients:
Nitrogen (N): Stimulates plant growth
as
a
component
Increases
tuber
Deficiency
of
chlorophyll.
protein
Symptoms:
content.
Reduced
seedling growth and pale leaves at
nursery
stage.
Excess:
Delayed
Deficiency Symptoms Of Nitrogen
maturity and excessive shoot growth.
Phosphorus (P) Encourages root and
tuber
development.
Deficiency
symptoms: Stunted plants growth,
yellowing of older leaves, small dark
green younger leaves.
Deficiency Symptoms Of phosphorous
Role of Nutrients:
Potassium (K): Stimulates leaf and tuber growth, increases resistance
to diseases and improves tuber quality. Deficiency symptoms:
Potassium deficiency retards nitrogen uptake, slow plant growth reduces
quality and quantity of yield, poor disease resistance. Typical symptoms
are necrosis of leaf margins, premature leaf senescence
Deficiency Symptoms Of potassium
Role of Nutrients:
Calcium (Ca): Calcium helps in cell division, cell elongation and cell
wall development, nitrate uptake, enzyme activity and starch
metabolism. Deficiency symptoms: stunted root growth, leaf & growing
tip deformation and reduced quality. Typical symptoms are yellow
curled chlorotic upper leaves and tip burns.
Deficiency Symptoms of Calcium
Role of Nutrients:
Magnesium (Mg): Magnesium acts as a carrier of phosphorus and
constituent of chlorophyll. It is necessary for enzyme activation and
nutrient uptake. Deficiency symptoms: Leaves get yellow-brown, wilt
and die; Stunted plants. Excess: Results in reduced calcium uptake
and symptoms similar to calcium deficiency.
Deficiency Symptoms Of magnesium
Role of Nutrients:
Sulphur (S): Sulphur application
reduces soil pH and thus severity of
common & powdery scab disease.
Deficiency
symptom:
Stunted
growth, reduction in leaf number.
Leaves turn pale green or yellow.
Deficiency Symptoms Of Sulphur
Iron (Fe): is important for chlorophyll
synthesis. Deficiency symptoms:
They first appear on the youngest
leaves. Inter veinal chlorosis with
green veins is observed. In severe
deficiency, the entire leaf becomes
chlorotic.
Deficiency Symptoms Of iron
Role of Nutrients:
Manganese (Mn): It is necessary in
photosynthesis. Deficiency symptoms:
Black or brown spots on younger leaves;
leaves yellowing.
Boron (B): it has important role in cell
Deficiency Symptoms Of Manganese
wall formation, germination, elongation of
pollen tube and metabolism & transport
of sugars. Deficiency symptoms: Death
of growing buds, plants bushy with
shorter internodes. Leaves thicken and
roll upward; leaf tissue darkens and
collapses.
Deficiency Symptoms Of Boron
.
Role of Nutrients:
Copper (Cu): Copper influences metabolism of nitrogen and
carbohydrates. Deficiency symptoms: Young leaves become flaccid
and wilted, terminal buds drop and leaf tips become necrotic.
