Objectives
1. To acquaint students with
different parts of a plant.
2. To enable students to
differentiate between different
parts of a plant.
3. To make students aware of
the functions of different parts
of a plant.

Introduction
Plants are living creatures that produce their own food
in presence of
sunlight making
use of atmospheric
carbon dioxide and
the water absorbed
from the soil. During this process, which is
known as Photosynthesis, plants release
oxygen into the atmosphere thus providing
us with this life-sustaining element.

Content
There are four main parts of a Plant:
Roots: These absorb water and minerals from the soil.
Stem: It supports the plant body and conducts sap from the
roots to the branches and leaves (shoot).
Leaves: These produce food for the plant in presence of
sunlight.
Flowers : These are the reproductive parts and help the
plant to reproduce.
The stem, and its branches together with the leaves, flowers
and the fruit are collectively known as the shoot.

Roots
1. The underground part of the
plant is called the root.
2. It absorbs water and minerals
from the soil.
3. Roots anchor the plant in the
soil.
4. Many plants such as carrots
store food in their roots.

Stem

4.
Stem supports the upper parts of the
plant.
It transports water and minerals
from the roots to the upper parts and
also supplies food from leaves down
to roots.
Many plants like onion, potato etc.
also store food in their stems.
Stem bears the branches on which
leaves, flowers and the fruit grow.

4.
Leaves are thin , green and
flat parts of a plant.
These prepare food for the
plant by photosynthesis.
Leaves take in carbon
dioxide from air , water
from soil and energy from
sun to carry out
photosynthesis.
During the process of
photosynthesis, oxygen is
released into the atmosphere
which in turn is utilized by
humans and animals for
their respiration.

3.
Flowers are the
reproductive parts of the
plant.
Flowers are often showy
to attract pollinators like
insects and birds.
The flower’s job is to
make seeds and fruits.

Activity
Dig out a small plant, say a tomato plant
carefully from the soil making sure
that roots are intact and not damaged.
Gently wash out the soil from the roots.
Observe different parts of the plant
keenly.
Try to understand their functions

Evaluation
Now let us see whether we remember what we have learnt:
Are plants living or non-living things?
What are the different parts of a plant?
What are the underground parts of a plant known as?
What is the shoot?
Which part of a plant conducts sap from the roots
upward?
What is the main function of leaves?
How do plants reproduce?
What is Photosynthesis?
