The Biosphere
Copy the stuff in Blue.
Biosphere
• The portion of the Earth that holds life
• Includes all organisms and the
environments they live in
• Biotic – all the living things
in the environment
–Ex. Animals, Plants,
Bacteria etc.
• Abiotic – all the non-living
things in the environment
–Ex. Rocks, Air, Water, etc.
Biomes
• The biosphere is broken up into large
areas called biomes
• Biome: A large group of ecosystems
that share the same environmental
factors
• Biomes are based on the climate and
the biotic and abiotic factors present
There are 2 types of Biomes:
Aquatic:
Terrestrial:
Water biomes
Land Biomes
AQUATIC BIOMES
• There are 3 Aquatic Biomes
–Marine Biomes: saltwater/ ocean
–Estuaries : Mix of fresh and salt water
–Freshwater Biomes: Lakes, rivers,
ponds and streams
Terrestrial Biomes
- Tundra
- Taiga
- Desert
- Grassland
- Temperate Forest
- Rainforest
Tundra
• A treeless land with very little sunlight
• Polar Climate
• Permafrost: constant ice and snow that
freezes the ground
• Shallow rooted grasses and plants
• Weasels, artic fox, penguins and polar bears
live in the Tundra.
Tundra
Taiga
•
•
•
•
•
Continental Climate
Continuous belt of pine, fur and spruce trees
Warmer and wetter than tundra
Harsh winters
More large species of animal are found in the
taiga:
lynx, elk, weasel, red deer, moose
Taiga
Desert
•
•
•
•
•
An arid (dry) region with very little plant life
Dry Climate
Rainfall is the major limiting factor
Coyotes, hawks, snakes, lizards
Tumbleweeds and cacti all live in the
desert.
Desert
Grassland
• Large communities covered with rich soil,
grasses, and similar plants.
• Dry Climate = No forest
• Ideal for cereal grains: oats, rye and
wheat
• Grazing animals live in the grasslandBison, rabbits, deer, prairie dog
Grassland
Temperate Forest
• Our biome
• Mild Climate
• Average rainfall and broad-leaved trees that
lose their leaves annually
• Animals that live there are bears, squirrels,
mice, deer and rabbits.
• Many birds live in the forests
Temperate Forest
Tropical Rain Forest
•
•
•
•
Tropical Climate
Warmer temperature
Lots of rain
Lush plant growth : Bamboo, orchids,
carnivorous plants
• Home to more species of organisms than
any other biome on Earth
• Monkeys, jaguars, large snakes and many
different insects live in the rainforest
