Roses By: Ric Moody Mr. Moody’s 3rd Grade Team St. Charles Elementary School Date: 12/5/2006 All About Roses Roses are a group of shrubs found in the temperate areas of the world. Roses have been used since Roman times as a show of wealth and for decoration. Roses are classified in the division Magnoliophyta, class Magnoliopsida, order Rosales, family Rosaceae. Body Parts Petals Pistil Sepal Stigma Stamen Peduncle (stem) Body Part Functions A petal is one of the leafy structures that comprise a flower. Petals are often brightly-colored and have many different shapes. They are located between the sepals and the flower's reproductive organs. The pistil is the collective term for the carpel(s). Each carpel includes an ovary (where the ovules are produced; ovules are the female reproductive cells, the eggs), a style (a tube on top of the ovary), and a stigma (which receives the pollen during fertilization). Stamens are the male reproductive parts of flowers. A stamen consists of an anther (which produces pollen) and a filament. The pollen consists of the male reproductive cells; they fertilize ovules. Sepals are the small leaves located underneath the flower. The stigma is part of the pistil, the female reproductive tissue of a flower. The stigma receives the male pollen grains during fertilization The peduncle or stem is the main support of the plant. Habitat The family is especially abundant in East Asia, Europe, and North America, where species of almost half of the family's genera are indigenous, especially in the Pacific coastal area. Interesting Facts The rose is the emblem of England and the national flower of the United States. The rose has been a favorite flower in many lands since prehistoric times. It appears in the earliest art, poetry, and tradition. It has been used in innumerable ways in decoration. In ancient times it was used medically. — Pliny lists 32 remedies made of its petals and leaves. Formerly it was eaten in salads and conserves. It was sacred to Aphrodite and was a favorite flower of the Romans, who spread its culture wherever their armies conquered.
