Air Masses and Fronts
Air Mass – A large body of air with uniform temperature and
humidity that moves slowly over a regional area.
Types of air masses
- Air masses are classified according to their source
region which determines their temperature and
humidity.
Fronts
- A boundary between a
dense cool air mass and a
warm less dense air mass.
Cold Front – When a cold air mass overtakes a warm air
mass lifting the warm air.
Warm Front – When a warm air mass overtakes a cool air
mass, the less dense warm air rising over the cool air.
Thunderstorms
When a warm humid air mass is heated and rises it
creates a storm that is associated with thunder, lightning
and strong winds.
