How Competition Shapes
Communities
Niche
• A species’ role in the ecosystem
What is does, where it eats, what it eats,
what it makes its nests from, where it gets
water….
• There is competition when 2
niches overlap
Niche
• In response, a species may occupy only
part of the niche that it could
• Fundamental niche the range an organism
COULD occupy
• Realized niche the part the species
ACTUALLY occupies
Niche
• Ex. page 366
• Cape May Warbler
only eats from the
top. Why?
• Other Warblers eat from
other parts of the tree
• Resource partitioning
they have divided the niche
• Ex. Barnacles
Competitive Exclusion
• When 2 species compete,
the species that uses
the resource most
efficiently may eliminate
the other
• Ex. Paramecium
Biodiversity
• Predation reduces competition between
prey species which increases biodiversity
• Example-pg. 370—Sea Stars
• The more biodiverse an area,
the more species richness,
the more stable an ecosystem
