Organization and
Relationships
Section 2.1
Organization in Ecology
organism: smallest level (one)
population: group of organisms of one
species that live together
community: group of interacting
populations
ecosystem: communities and abiotic
factors (environment)
biome: group of ecosystems with similar
characteristics; can be found in different
parts of the world
biosphere: area supports life around
Earth
Relationships in Ecology
Symbiosis: relationships among
organisms of different species
mutualism: both species benefit from
interaction
commensalism: one species benefits,
the other is neither harmed nor helped
parasitism: one species benefits by
harming the other species but usually
doesn’t kill it
predator-prey: NOT symbiotic, one
species kills and eats the other species
What kind of relationship is this?
Isopod feeds on soldierfish’s body tissues
Egret: eats grasshoppers and other insects
Clown fish cleans
sea anemone
and
sea anemone
displaced
by other
animals
Acacia plant, ants,
and caterpillar:
ants drink nectar
provides habitat and protection for clown fish
from caterpillar, caterpillar feeds off acacia plant, and
ants protect acacia plant from harmful organisms
