Kingdom
• 6 types
• Will deal only with Kingdom Animalia
• Broad way to classify an organism
Phylum
• 35 different types of phyla in Kingdom
Animalia
• Sponges, jellyfish, clams, crabs, sea stars
and fish all have different phylums
• Most fish are listed under the phylum
chordata
Class
• Sharks, whales, turtles, and fish all have
different classes
• We are listed under the same class as
whales.
Order
• Can help distinguish different types of
marine organisms based on similarities
and differences
• Whales and dolphins share the same
order
Family
• Can distinguish marine organisms
similarities and differences even further.
• Can separate different types of whales
such as blue whales and humpback
whales from killer whales
Genus
• Can separate a blue whale from a
humpback whale
Species
• Most unique rank of living organisms
• There can be as many as hundreds of
species in a single genus or a few as one
• When writing the scientific name of an
organism the genus goes first followed by
the species.
• Balaenoptera musculus (Blue Whale)
