Industrial Waste Database System in Cyprus
It is an integrated management system for the monitoring of
industrial units and released pollutants in Cyprus.
It consists of:
• Industry database
• Air emissions and industrial wastewater database
• VOC database
• Best Available Teqhniques (BAT) database
• Statistical & reporting programs evaluating effluent
measurements
• Geographical Information System (GIS) showing the
environmental “weak” areas in Cyprus.
Industrial Waste Database System in Cyprus
Software characteristics
The system is designed for use in a network environment –
Microsoft NT Windows
The databases were designed with Microsoft SQL Server
The application programs were developed using the
programming language DELPHI
The Geographical Information System (GIS) used is ARCVIEW
Industrial Waste Database System in Cyprus
Project Aim
Development of an industrial waste database system in
which technical and environmental data of industrial
units is statistically processed and evaluated according
to the environmental regulations.

Industrial Waste Database System in Cyprus
Management of Database Tables
This module contains programs which allow the user
to enter data concerning the industry’s identity,
water supply, liquid wastes, VOC emissions, solid and
dangerous wastes, oil residues.
Industrial Waste Database System in Cyprus
Industrial Data
A number of programs allow the user
to easily pass through some screens
and view the industry’s data
Industrial Waste Database System in Cyprus
Questionnaire
Holds
environmental
data
concerning :
Production
process units
Liquid wastes
Solid wastes
Gaseous wastes
VOC’s
Oil residues
The Questionnaire holds environmental data
concerning a specific industry.
An industry may have many questionnaires
related to a specific sample and date of
measurement.

All programs are designed
to have a user-friendly
interface.
Tab access to various
screens
List boxes for all parametric tables
Industrial Waste Database System in Cyprus
Reports / Statistical programs
The application offers 21
reports, some of them are :
• Effluent measurements per
industry, geographical area,
NACE code, recipient
• Water usage,
• Industry categorization
(NACE coding)
For each report, the user may
define different selection
criteria.
The reports may be viewed
on the screen and forwarded
to the network printer.

Geographical Information System
Data contained in the database tables are shown on the
Cyprus map according to the view selected by the user.
Each time an emission entry is added to the database, it is
projected on the map.
The user may also select and
view data for specific districts
which are colored according to
the level of liquid wastes.
Industrial Waste Database System in Cyprus
Conclusion
The Industrial Waste Database System is quite
important as a decision support tool since it can
assist the environmental authorities in Cyprus to :
access / update the existing situation of emissions
define problematic areas where pollutants exceed
allowable levels
take necessary pollution control measures
Industrial Pollution Emission Registry in Greece
The IPER system is an inventory system of industrial
pollution and was established by the Greek Ministry of
Environment as a basis for the assessment of the existing
situation forming a “platform” for the implementation of
IPPC.
This inventory system consists of:
• Industrial installations from 52 industrial branches
• Production capacities
• Relevant pollutant emissions
Industrial Pollution Emission Registry in Greece
The Industrial Pollution Emission Registry (IPER) is linked with the
National Network of Environmental Information (NNEI) providing
the NNEI with data concerning industrial emissions.
NNEI is a nation-wide network linked with all regions in Greece
transferring environmental information from/to the relevant
authorities. The information is accessible to a certain level by the
public through Internet.

Industrial Pollution Emission Registry in Greece
The IPER Databases contain industrial inventory data from:
• Inventory questionnaires
• On-site visits
• Sampling and analysis of pollutants (solid/liquid
waste, air emissions)
• Environmental impact assessment studies
• Waste factors from WHO, CORINAIR
• Calculated waste factors

IPER outputs:
(1) Assessment of the existing situation:
 per industrial branch/installation
 per pollution type
 per geographical entity
 per environmental recipient
(2) Pollution forecasting in case of production change
(3) Assessment of additional pollution load in case of new industrial
installations
Additional expertise in the implementation of
the IPPC Directive
Two Decision Support Tools (DST) for the tanning and
the textile industry.
These tools have been developed within the
framework of the European LIFE Programme and are
considered as success stories.
Software for the use of clean technologies,
conservation of raw materials and optimisation of
production processes in tanneries.

How is the target accomplished ?
DST offers :
Material Balance Report
Cost Balance Report
Proposal of available BATs
for each unit operation
Decision-maker profits from :
Determination of environmental
“weak” spots
Allocation of “lost” money
Suggestion of better
environmental performance,
saving money
Clean Technology application
The manager may compare
the new “cleaner”
production process with
the actual one and finally
decide ...
