What are the parts of a cell? How do they function? What Are the differences between plant and animal cells? Animal Cells Nucleus: Regulates all cell activity, produces ribosome’s Nuclear membrane Mitochondria: Site of chemical reactions, have their own DNA Lysosomes: Digest excess or wornout organelles, food particles, and engulfed viruses or bacteria. Materials: Microscope Slides Iodine Slip cover Onion/cheek tissue Procedure: A. Prepare a wet mount slide of onion root/ cheek cells Remove onion root from onion stem/ cotton swab cheek. Place the root/cheek on a glass slide. Place a drop of iodine stain on your onion/cheek tissue. Place cover slip over stained tissue. Golgi apparatus: The Golgi apparatus processes and packages macromolecules, such as proteins and lipids. Cell membrane: Regulates passage of materials in and out of the cell Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum: Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum: Cytoplasm: Gelatinous substance inside cell Membrane but outside the nucleus, contains organelles. Plant Cells Plasmodesmata: Tubes between cell wall Cell membrane: Regulates passage of materials in and out of the cell Vacuole: Storage, (water) Conclusion: The plant cell has a more angular cell and all the cells are joined together. The animal cells have a more circular shape that is a little less defined. Animal Cells Plant Cells
