Cell Structure and Function
All cells share certain features:
A lipid bilayer plasma membrane
Use DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) as genetic blueprint
Contain cytoplasm
Obtain energy and nutrients from environment
Most are small because of surface area to volume ratio constraints of
diffusion with increasing size.
Cell Structure and Function
In general, there are two basic types of cells:
Prokaryotes – These are typically organisms with no nucleus or major
organelles within their cells… although they appear simple,
they can be biochemically very complex.
Include bacteria and archaeans.
Eukaryotes – These are organisms with nuclei and cellular organelles.
They include all animals, plants, fungi, and protozoa.
