Mitosis vs. Meiosis
A little bit of review…
Mitosis is cell division, producing 2 new
cells that are identical to the parent
Mitosis is an example of asexual
reproduction, where there is just ____
parent!
Mitosis v.Meiosis
In other words, you are taking a diploid cell and
creating two more diploid cells
Diploid: Cells that have pairs of similar
chromosomes – body cells.
Body Cells: Cells that are found throughout
your body.
Ex. If the parent cell has 10 chromosomes, then it goes
through mitosis, how many chromosomes will be in
the ‘daughter’ cells? ________
Mitosis vs. Meiosis
Now….Meiosis!
Meiosis is the process of cell division, where
haploid cells (sex cells) are produced
Haploid: cells that do not have chromosome
pairs – they have half the number of
chromosomes.
Sex Cells: Cells that contain half of an
organism’s DNA – sperm and egg cells.

Answer these questions…
How many steps are in meiosis?
In meiosis, you start with _____ cell and
end with _____ cells.
In meiosis, you start with a ________ cell
and end with a ___________ cell
Meiosis
So for example….
If a cell has 10 chromosomes and it goes
through meiosis, how many
chromosomes will be present in the
new cells? _______
Meiosis and Fertilization
Now, when two sex cells join together
(fertilization), you have a diploid cell –
the first cell of that new organism!
Review
So what are some differences between
mitosis and meiosis?
Mitosis
Meiosis
