Movement of molecules against the gradient
Uses carrier proteins
Move from lo hi
Moves ions like Na+, K+, and Ca++
Uses energy (ATP) to pump out molecules
ATP ADP + P (breaking a bond releases
energy)

Active Transport-importing
•
Endocytosis: movement of large materials
(polypeptides) into the cell by creating a
vesicle from the cell membrane
1. Phagocytosis: “eating” or bringing in
large solid particles ex: amoeba eating
2. Pinocytosis: “drinking” or bringing in
fluid from outside the cell
Active Transport-exporting
• Exocytosis: movement of materials out of
the cell using a vesicle that fuses with the
cell membrane and releases material outside
• All is done through the golgi apparatus
