What are chromosomes?
• Double rods of condensed chromatin
• Chromatin is the material in cells that
contains DNA and carries genetic
information (the blueprint of the organism)
Chromosomes Numbers
• All plants and animals have a certain number
of chromosomes in their body cells called the
diploid (or 2n) number.
Lets try some examples!
Zea mays (corn or maize)
has 20 chromosomes
• How many chromosomes does the parent
cell normally have?
• How many chromosomes does the parent
cell have right before it divides?
• How many chromosomes does each of the
daughter cells have after cell division?
Mus musculus
(house mouse)
has 40 chromosomes
• How many chromosomes does the parent
cell normally have?
• How many chromosomes does the parent
cell have right before it divides?
• How many chromosomes does each of the
daughter cells have after cell division?
Cambarus clarkii
(a crayfish) has 200
chromosomes
• How many chromosomes does the parent
cell normally have?
• How many chromosomes does the parent
cell have right before it divides?
• How many chromosomes does each of the
daughter cells have after cell division?
Vampires
(like Edward)
have 50 chromosomes
• How many chromosomes does the parent
cell normally have?
• How many chromosomes does the parent
cell have right before it divides?
• How many chromosomes does each of the
daughter cells have after cell division?
