FIVE ELEMENTS OF MUSIC
MELODY – the tune in music; often singable; single notes/pitches
Example: Gregorian Chant
HARMONY – 2 or more pitches sounding simultaneously; chords
RHYTHM – the beat and counting in music
Examples: waltz, march, syncopated, polyrhythm
FORM – the architecture of music; how the composition is put
together
Examples: ABA (ternary), AB (binary), Theme and Variation,
12-bar blues, 32 bar chorus form, rondo, sonata-allegro
TEXTURE – the layering of sounds; can be described as thick or thin or
anything in between
Examples: Monophonic, Homophonic, Polyphonic,
Heterophonic
