The Sun
The Sun is a STAR.
A STAR is a ball of hot glowing gases.
Because the SUN is so bright, you can not see
the other stars during the day.
The SUN is the center of the
SOLAR SYSTEM.

Center and Temperature
The center of the SUN seems to glow because
of the heat and energy that it gives off.
The temperature on the sun ‘s Surface is very
hot. In the center it is much hotter.
The Sun and Energy
The SUN produces ENERGY that travels out
from the Surface of the SUN.
Energy from the SUN lights and warms the
EARTH.
Sunspots
There are dark spots and bright spots on the
SUN’S Surface.
The dark spots are called SUNSPOTS.
They appear dark because they are cooler than
the areas around them.
Flares
The temperature in the bright spots, called
flares, is higher than the temperature of the
SUN’S Surface.
Earth’s Axis
Earth’s axis is an imaginary line that runs
between the North Pole and South Pole.
Earth’s spinning
Earth’s spinning causes night and day.
Rotation
The Earth makes one complete spin, or
ROTATION every 24 hours.
Revolution
The path the Earth travels around the sun is
called an orbit. One complete orbit around the
Sun is called a REVOLUTION.
