Case Study: Houston,
we have a problem..
A malfunction in Apollo 13 caused gasses to vent
into space and then crystallize. Even though the
crystals had left the spacecraft, they continued to
move along next to the capsule. The navigation
system used stars as “finders” to maintain
course, but with all the crystals surrounding the
capsule, the navigation system was not able to
distinguish a star from a crystal.
Why did these crystals stay with the spacecraft,
rather that “drift away” once they were no longer
confined?
