Constellation: a pattern of stars
Con = with, together; stellae = stars.
Asterism: partial portion of a constellation
Apparent Magnitude: how bright a star
seems when viewed from Earth
• Luminosity: amount of energy a star
emits over time; W, L units.
• i.e. Ls = 3.85 x 1026 W; Sirius is 23 Ls
Apparent Magnitude:

two stars from
Earth, they may
look equally
bright, but
actually have
very different
luminosities.
