SIMPLE ELECTRIC MOTOR
WHAT IS AN ELECTRIC
MOTOR?
•
Turns electricity into
motion (the motor part of
the name)
SIMPLE MOTOR
•
We need
•
Battery - for the electricity
•
Copper wire to carry
electricity
•
Magnet to push the wire
•
Paper clips to support
STEP 1
•
Make a coil from the wire.
•
Leave two ends sticking
out
STRIP THE WIRE
•
Take the plastic coating
completely off one end
•
Take the plastic coating
half off the other end
•
This is the tricky bit.
SET UP THE MOTOR
•
Bend the paper clips into
shape to support the coil.
•
Join one paper clip to
each end of the battery to
make the circuit
•
Bring the magnet close to
the coil and give the coil
a spin.
WHY DOES IT SPIN?
•
The electricity flowing
through the wire makes
magnetism.
•
The magnetic field from
the magnet pushes
against the magnetic field
from the coil.
•
As the coil is light and
free to spin, while the
magnet is not, the coil
spins
