A Behind the Scenes Tour of
The Tennity Wildlife Hospital and Conservation Center
at The Living Desert

The Living Desert is a zoological garden park of 1200 acres near Palm Springs, CA, representing
many of the arid environments of the world. It was established in 1970 as a non-profit education
and conservation center, dedicated to preserving the plant and animal life of the desert. Desert
regions are often thought of as lifeless wastelands. Actually they are intricate and very fragile
ecosystems containing an astonishing variety of animal and plant life. Many species that are
extremely rare and seldom s een are represented here. The Living Desert is one of the m ost
successful zoological parks in the country and is fully accr edited by the American Zoological

Living Desert opened a
state-of-the-art veterinary
hospital. The new Tennity
Wildlife Hospital replaced
much smaller quarters. It
cares for a variety of
animals, encompassing
reptiles, birds, and
mammals. The collection
is envisioned to expand
to include non-human
primates and giraffes.

Palms to Pines will be your host for this special event and invites all th e local branches in the
area -- Southern California, Orange County, San Diego, North ern California, Nevada, and
Arizona -- to attend. To accommodate those traveling from a far, this AALAS meeting of the
'branches' has been scheduled for a Friday/Saturday combinat ion. For your interest in the
animal science side of things, come to check out the veterinary center with us on Friday. Then
spend the night (or two) at one of the local ho tels at off-season rates, so you can visit the
grounds on Saturday (tickets will be included). View the ma ny plants and animals that make
the desert their habitat along paved paths through 10 differ ent desert ecosystems, the Village
WaTuTu, Eagle Canyon, and the garden shop of desert plants. So, make a weekend of it and
bring your family. Do the drive, hobnob with colleagues, and relax at The Living Desert.

THE DETAILS for THE LIVING DESERT/AALAS MEETING
When? Friday starts with a welcoming reception at 4 PM in the great hall of the veterinary center. At 5:30, Dr.
Kevin Leiske will talk. Around 6, we'll break into groups and be treated to a behind-the-scenes view of the
new center including the public-viewing treatment area, quarantine, isolation, and more. Afterwards, we'll
have hors d'oeuvres with a bar hosted by our vendor friends.
Saturday can be spent touring the grounds after spend ing Friday night locally. Come back early
Saturday (as early as 7 AM before it's too hot). Tickets are included; distributed Friday night.

below. From wherever you live/work, head towards the Palm Springs/Indio area on the I-10 freeway.

entrance on your left.
Once on Portola Ave., follow the signs to the main entrance on the left. There is plenty of free parking. In
case you get lost, the phone number at The Living Desert is 760-346-5694.
Proceed to the ticket entrance and identify yourself as an AALAS meeting attendee to gain entry and
obtain directions to the Tennity Center meeting area. It’s to the left past the entrance.
