UMUX – Wide Range of Interfaces
UMUX supports a large number of different
network and application interfaces. The following section presents the most important
interfaces and functions of UMUX.
Data Services
Whether connecting a PLC (programmable
logic controller), a pipeline valve, video cameras for surveillance in or outside buildings,
routers to a network or a ticket box at the
entrance hall of a train station to a network they all have common transport requirements
but one thing is always different: the type of
interface.
To solve this dilemma UMUX provides a variety
of data interfaces and services. Binary contacts, sub bit rates, a variety of data interfaces
(e. g. G.703, V.11, V.24, V.35) up to Ethernet
10/100BaseFX and Gigabit Ethernet with
transmission capacity of 1 Gbps are available.
For business customers SHDSL is available with
a variety of subscriber interfaces and optional
regenerators.
Different ATM interfaces with 34/45 Mbps and
SDH STM-1 interfaces (optical or electrical)
are also offered as subscriber interfaces. SDH
STM-1/-4 interfaces with a maximum rate of
622 Mbps are available for the uplink. By using
SFP connections for the SDH interfaces you
can adapt the interfaces easily to local requirements.
These numerous features with data services are
topped off by the SDH Add-Drop Multiplexer
and Digital Cross Connect functions.

Ethernet Services
Voice Services
Ethernet, once only deployed for local connections, is growing in its importance. UMUX
meets this demand with its broad spectrum of
Ethernet functionalities that coexist in a network element besides voice and data services.
In addition to data und Ethernet services a
wide range of specific functions make UMUX
also ideal to provide legacy POTS and ISDN
services in dedicated networks.
These functionalities include switching and
routing, PoE+ (Power over Ethernet) and EoS
(Ethernet over SDH) belong to these requirements. Remote units can be supplied with a
remote feeding voltage of up to 30 V using
PoE+. This way you can operate VoIP
telephones, routers or even WiMAX micro base
stations in locations where no local power supply is available.
Beside voice conferencing directly in UMUX,
special interfaces in the telematics and railways are supported, including E&M interfaces,
telephones with an exchange battery connector
(magneto telephones) and telephone exchange
interfaces.

Multi-Service Networks
Multi-service networks have to support voice
and data services in a cost-effective manner
at various locations, in exchanges, in street
cabinets or directly in multi-tenant buildings.
The UMUX product family meets these requirements in the different network architecture and
provides the desired type of service.
Voice and data service can be flexibly combined and provided directly into the customer’s
premises. Broadband data services are supported according to the relevant standards:
SDH, ATM and IP.

UMUX – Applications
Cost-efficient Introduction of Ethernet
Services via SDH Networks
Terrestric Transmission in Mobile
Networks
With increasing success of VPN services and
enhanced demand for broadband business
Internet access network, operators need an
cost-efficient solution for high-speed access
lines with Ethernet termination. As the density
of this service type grows at different rates in
different Point of Presence (POP) locations, an
Ethernet overlay network might not be justified
all the time.
Networking of the base station is an important
expense factor for mobile network operators. The optimisation of costs in this field and
therefore the optimum utilisation of transmission capacity and transmission media is a high
priority objective.
With its Ethernet over SDH implementation
(NEBRO/NEBRA/SYN4E modules) UMUX offers
the most cost-effective transmission of Ethernet
services via the existing infrastructure of the
SDH network.
With the cross-connect capability of UMUX,
grooming of the mobile traffic can be achieved
at every hub in the radio access network to
increase the efficiency of every access link.
Using xDSL, optical and G.703 interfaces,
UMUX integrates into any available transmission media (copper, optical fibre, radio relay).
With the integrated ATM multiplexing, UMUX
supports the migration towards UMTS networks
on the same access platform.

Safety sensitive Data Transmission for
Railways
Transmission of application-critical
data on long Routes
When extending telecommunication networks
and integrating new services (e. g. Ethernet),
the safety standards EN 50128 and 50129 for
railway technology are relevant. This means
that your network has to guarantee minimum
impact when failure occurs in interface line
cards. An SDH network is mandatory in this
type of network, as “switched” Ethernet-based
networks are not allowed.
Operators of a telecommunication network
with widely separated locations (e. g. alongside of railroads, motorways, gas/oil pipelines,
waterways, water/power supply networks) have
to transmit application-critical data reliably
electrically and/or optically. Radio relay connections and leased connections are also used as
an alternative.
An efficient and robust data transmission
system that provides data aggregation and
secured transport is imminent.
UMUX has been fulfilling the requirements of
these standards for years and is employed in
this special field successfully by international
railway companies. UMUX provides Ethernet
over SDH (EoS) and optical and electrical SDH
interfaces as e. g. STM-4 with 622 Mbps. With
EoS, extensive protection functions and a
robust design (outdoor-capable) it is possible
to continue using the existing telecommunication network while offering new services with
EoS without installation of new and expensive
transmission lines.
UMUX provides the right interface for a great
range of applications and gives you maximum
flexibility and reliability in one single network
element.

UMUX – Benefits
Designed for highest Availability
One Management System
UMUX is designed for outdoor application. All
components have an extended operation temperature range of -20 °C to +70 °C. This ensures
seamless operation even in extreme environmental conditions.
The management of all UMUX units is an integral part of the UCST/UNEM management system. Due to its structure UNEM can be scaled
well and can be easily adapted to your network
environment. It provides an intuitive graphical
user interface (GUI) that presents a customised network structure. For the integration
into higher OSS (Operational Support System)
SNMP, CLI and XML interfaces are available. So
operators have their familiar environment and
the implementation process is accelerated.
UMUX provides the services in carrier-grade
quality. For this purpose, all critical UMUX units
can be installed redundantly in a subrack to
guarantee maximum availability. These units
include the control units, SDH uplink units,
power supply etc.
Alternative/protection routing mechanisms
available on the UMUX reinforce this concept
and guarantee highest availability:

Multiplex Section Protection (MSP)
Furthermore the optional UNEM Networking
Package provides automatic trail provisioning
and management.
UMUX – All in One
Sub Network Connection Protection (SNCP)
Linear Trail Protection (LTP)
1+1 Equipment Protection (EQP)
1+1 Path Protection
Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) and
Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP)
Due to this wide spectrum of interfaces and
functions, UMUX is the ideal network element
in a heterogeneous environment. With UMUX
it’s easy to merge different services in one single compact network element, replacing many
network elements. This will save costs during
provisioning, for maintenance and training.
