ASSONANCE, CONSONANCE AND ALLITERATION
Sound in Poetry
Assonance is the repetition of vowel sounds within words.
Consonance is the close repetition of consonant sounds at the ends of words
or syllables.
Alliteration is the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words or
syllables.
*Note: all of these sound devices have similar sounds, not letters. City and
search is an example of alliteration, while city and country is not.

TEACHING STRATEGIES
Sound in Poetry
1. Presenting the importance of sound in poetry by introducing sounds in
music and the emotions they provoke.
Viewing a video with different styles of music playing in the background.
Video: Tony Hawk Skateboarding
 Mute the music being played in the background of this video. Play A
Night on Bald Mountain in background and get students to write down
how the music makes them feel and what effect it has on the video
being shown.
 Do the same activity with varying styles of music. These could include a
slower acoustic track, like Mango Tree, or a fast-paced rock track, like
The Pretender.
Explain to students that just like music, the sound in poetry has an important
effect on the mood and overall feeling of the poem
2. In pairs, students are to pick one of the following sounds to provoke a
particular emotion or feeling.
One student is to repeat the sound instead of saying any words. The listener
must guess what kind of emotion is provoked.
Sounds could include:
ick
sa
asc
may
hm
ni
tee
beh
3. Matching words according to alliteration, consonance and assonance.
Have 2 columns of words and get students to link them according to their
matching sounds of alliteration, consonance and assonance.
For Example:
i)
Match the phrases and words in column 1 to those in column 2 in
order to make the best example of alliteration. Link the words in
column 1 to their matching word in column 2.

order to make the best example of assonance. Link the words in
