“Street Drugs Exposed – What Your Patients
and Your Kids ARE NOT Telling You!!”
Recommended: For dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, receptionists, and
spouses. *Must be 18 years of age or older to attend-no exceptions
PROGRAM: What questions should I be asking my patients to avoid drug interactions with street drugs? What is the impact on my practice of
the recent resolutions, approved by the American Dental Association, for providing dental care for patients who are and/or have been chemically
dependent? What are some of the oral manifestations of street drug abuse? How will I know if a person is under the influence of street drugs?
What are the characteristics of and how do I manage the “doctor shopper”? Do I have to take any precautions with the dental patient who
is under the influence? Why is it so important that the dental staff be knowledgeable about street drugs? Why am I at risk? What are some
characteristics of adolescent substance abuse and what do I do about it? What is the impact of marijuana legalization on dentistry?
The dental team is in a unique position, providing dental care to a patient population that may be regular users or experimenting with mood
altering drugs. This dynamic, brutally honest, and graphic presentation will take you from the streets and into the office to help you identify and
manage the substance abusing patient. Discussion includes the origins, types, mechanisms of action, and signs and symptoms of commonly
abused prescription and illicit drugs.
You Will Learn:
■ The signs and symptoms of commonly abused prescription and
illicit drugs in patients and adolescents.
■ How to manage the chemically-dependent patient.
■ What is “wax, “dab”, or “scat” and how will it affect me?
■ What are “meth mouth”, “lean”, “whippets”, “parachuting”,
“bath salts”, “Spice Diamond, Spice Gold” and more?
■ What medications to avoid with the suspected drug abusing patient.
■ Why some people become addicted and others do not.
■ How to recognize and manage the ‘doctor shopper”.
■ How my kid gets intoxicated on hand sanitizer?
Speaker
Harold L. Crossley, D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D.
Dr, Crossley is Professor Emeritus at the University of Maryland
Dental School. A native of Rhode Island, Dr. Crossley received a
Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from the University of Rhode
Island in 1964. He later was awarded the Master of Science (1970) and
Doctorate degrees (1972) in Pharmacology. The University of Maryland
Dental School in Baltimore awarded Dr. Crossley the D.D.S. degree
in 1980. The liaison between the classroom and his part-time dental
practice produced a practical approach to understanding the pharmacology of drugs used in the dental office.
Dr. Crossley has co-authored a number of articles and four books
dealing with a variety of topics within the field of pharmacology.
Other areas of expertise include the pharmacology of street drugs and
chemical dependency. He serves on the Maryland State Dental As-
sociation’s Well-Being Committee, is an active member of Phi Kappa
Phi, Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honorary Dental Society, the American
College of Dentists, International College of Dentists, and an honorary member of the Thomas B. Hinman Dental Society. He was the
recipient of the 2008 Gordon Christensen Lecturer Recognition award
presented by the Chicago Dental Society and the recipient of the 2012
Award of Distinction presented by the Academy of Dentistry International for his efforts in Continuing Dental Education. He has been a
consultant for the United States Drug Enforcement Administration and
other law enforcement agencies since 1974. Drawing on this unique
background, Dr. Crossley has become nationally and internationally
recognized as an expert on street drugs and chemical dependency as
well as the clinical pharmacology of dental drugs.

“EMPLOYMENT COMPLIANCE FOR DENTISTS”
(What you don’t know could hurt you.)
Program:
Since human resource management and compliance with
the variety of state and federal labor regulations are not
taught in the typical dental school curriculum, doctors often
find themselves in court regarding employment issues.
Such lawsuits can be emotionally draining and financially
devastating.
Dealing wisely and effectively with complex employment
issues can be particularly challenging and personnel issues are
a major source of stress for most practitioners. This can come
in various forms such as: employee pay, benefits (vacation,
sick, medical, retirement, etc.), leave of absence, pregnancy,
hiring, and termination, just to name a few.
Geared for the dentist/owner, this presentation delves
deeply into how to easily apply proven, professional
personnel management techniques to some of the many
common personnel problems to help take the risk out of being
an employer and insure employment law compliance. Each
participant will be provided with a presentation handout
along with supporting resource material.

Adrienne Wright
Adrienne Wright is an HR and employment compliance
specialist with Bent Ericksen & Associates. Adrienne provides
educational programs, training and human resource services
to dental professionals. With her HR expertise and experience,
coupled with a background managing a large dental group
practice, Adrienne’s presentations are insightful and practical,
with an HR success oriented focus.
Adrienne believes HR success is achieved through:
1) An “infrastructure” of employment law compliance, basic
HR principles, job descriptions and policy manuals, to
ensure a solid foundation from which to grow.
2) A “recruitment” process, i.e. better recruiting and
interviewing techniques, reference checking and
background checks, and job matching/job selection
processes, to ensure hiring the right people to first time.
3) Tools for more “effective staff management”, i.e.
maximizing the potential and success of people, to
ensure long term retention and better job performance/
satisfaction. This includes improving communication,
performance reviews, teambuilding, problem solving,
conflict resolution and bonus/incentive plans.
You will learn how to:

exposure and liability.
■ Minimize exposure to potentially costly
lawsuits and complaints.

“Do You Have a Transition Plan?”
Program: All practitioners should and must have a transition plan. This seminar will explain the numerous options
available to a dentist regarding a practice transition. Moreover it will clearly outline the steps a dentist should and should
not take to insure a successful transition. The common methodologies that are used to establish the market value of a
practice will be discussed. “Walk-Away” and role- reversal transitions will be reviewed and discussed.

Joseph McManus, DMD, MS, MHA, MBA, MS, FACD
Dr. McManus received his dental degree from the University of Pennsylvania and his certificate in pediatric dentistry from the Children’s Hospital
of Philadelphia. In addition to his clinical training he has earned master
degrees in Management, Health Administration, Business Administration
and Higher Education.
He has enjoyed an eclectic career. He practiced pediatric dentistry for
over 25 years. He served on the faculty of Columbia University College
of Dental Medicine where he held positions as Associate Professor, Associate Dean and as the Executive Director of the Faculty Practices. From
2010 to 2012 he was the Senior Vice-President of the Division of Dental
Practice/Professional Affairs at the American Dental Association. He has
lectured at dental schools and national dental meetings on dental practice transitions.
Today Dr. McManus is an Associate Clinical Professor of Dental Medicine at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine and is the Director of Practice Management at the College. He serves on the American
Academy of Pediatric Dentistry’s Policy Center Advisory Board and is a
consultant for Henry Schein Professional Practice Transitions

“Opportunities for the Dental Profession —­
What does the data tell us?”
Program:
Dentistry is a profession in transition. Several major shifts are occurring simultaneously to reshape the U.S. dental care sector. Utilization of dental care is down among adults and up among
children – and not because of the recession. New models of dental care delivery are emerging.
Dental school tuition and student debt loads are at an all-time high. A new wave of health care
consumerism is changing how the population ‘shops’ for care. On top of all this, the Affordable
Care Act (ACA) is about to transform the U.S. health care system with important implications for
dentistry. Medicaid expansion, the establishment of health insurance marketplaces, and provider
payment reform that will emphasize value are key aspects of tomorrow’s environment. This engaging, data-driven discussion will provide an overview of the changing dental landscape, looking retrospectively at important trends, and prospectively at what the future environment holds.
The opportunities for the dental profession will be discussed extensively.

Dr. Marko Vujicic is Chief Economist and Vice President of the
Health Policy Institute at the American Dental Association. He is
responsible for overseeing all of the Association’s policy research
activities. Prior to joining the American Dental Association, he was
Senior Economist with The World Bank in Washington D.C. where he
directed the global health workforce policy program. He was also a Health Economist with the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland.
Dr. Vujicic is the lead author of the book, Working in Health, and has written several book chapters on various health policy issues. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals such as Health Affairs, The New England Journal of Medicine, Health Services Research, Health Policy
and Planning, Social Science and Medicine, and Applied Health Economics and Health Policy. He has worked extensively on broad health care reform
issues in Africa, East Asia, the Caribbean and Eastern Europe.
He is a visiting assistant professor at Tufts University in Boston.

Shannon Pace Brinker, CDA is a National and International
Speaker and published author. She has been a full time
practicing dental assistant for over 23 years. Shannon
and her husband Erik are the owners of a new publication
Contemporary Product Solutions. Shannon is a member
of the E4D Clinical Operations Operators (ECO) group and
had extensive input for the certified dental designer CDD
certification. Shannon was selected one of Dentistry Today’s
Top 100 Clinicians of 2009- 2014. She was also selected
as Dental Products Report 25 most influential women in
dentistry and Dr. Bicuspid’s dental assisting educator of the
year in 2012 and the AACD’s Riding Star Award 2013.
