A FAITH-BASED MINISTRY
Independent Living Assisted Living Skilled Nursing Intergenerational Center (Adult Day/Child Learning)
Welcome…
Welcome to the inaugural issue of the Heritage Herald! After many
months of careful planning and preparation, we are excited and pleased to introduce this publication. What can you expect to find among the pages? The Heritage Herald will highlight the service lines and amenities offered through each
of our recently expanded campus: Heritage Village, Lodge, and Estates, and
Intergenerational Center, both child and adult. We will promote educational
articles on various health topics, and reveal information on medical and technological advances which will be available to you within the Provena Health system. A calendar of upcoming events and human interest stories will
encourage planning for participation and bring you closer to the people we
serve. Included in each newsletter, a current listing of administrative personnel
will be provided for a quick reference, if needed.
On a personal note, during my twenty years at Provena Heritage Village, I
have witnessed many positive changes and continual growth and truly believe
that we aren’t finished! Spurred by an enduring commitment to strengthen,
grow, and position their Catholic health care ministries for the opportunities that
come with Reform, Provena Health and Resurrection Health Care proactively
pursued a merger of equals aimed at expanding patient access to high quality
care for millions of Illinois residents. Born from a foundation of uniquely similar Missions and Values, the new system offers a full continuum of services
including hospitals, senior care facilities, outpatient clinics, physician offices,
home health and behavioral health services. The organization offers a nationally
recognized array of sophisticated clinical programs and leading edge diagnostics
and has significantly progressed toward implementation of state-of-the-art electronic medical systems. As you may have heard, on November 1, 2011,
Provena Health and Resurrection Health Care finalized their merger. With the
realization of this opportunity, we have the distinction of being the “largest notfor profit Catholic health system in Illinois”. After the unification process, the
sponsoring Sisters reflected upon the belief that a new name should respect the
legacies of the founding health systems, while balancing innovation with the
missions and values, and advancing the new organization. Presence Health has
been unveiled, as our new name.
Presence Health embodies the act of being “present” in every moment, and
represents the cornerstone of a patient, resident, and family-center care environment.
As always, we would appreciate your feedback
and suggestions, as our team begins to work on the
next quarterly publication, for your viewing pleasure.
Sincerely,
Carol McIntyre, PHV Administrator

Heart Failure: What is it?
No, it is not your heart failing to beat, but rather the inability of
your heart to pump enough blood to your body. Heart failure is
caused by damage to your heart that may have occurred from
coronary artery or heart valve disease; diabetes; autoimmune
diseases; high blood pressure; high cholesterol; abnormal heart
beats, or even some medications. Heart failure can have a sudden onset, called acute heart failure. It can also be a long-term
or chronic disease. Based on current estimates more than six
million Americans have heart failure, with another 550,000
people being diagnosed with heart failure every year.
Symptoms of heart failure can include feeling tired and weak;
experiencing shortness of breath during mild or usual daily
Activities; trouble breathing when laying down; or waking up at
night coughing or breathless. Many of these symptoms can be
the result of fluid building up in your lungs. Fluid can also
collect in other parts of your body. This may cause swelling or
edema in your feet, ankles, legs, or waist. Sudden weight gain
of 2 to 3 pounds in one day or 5 pounds in a week can be
indicative of this fluid retention.
What can you do if you have been diagnosed with heart failure?
Your focus should be on helping your heart do its job effectively. This means taking your medications as ordered by your
physician: following a low sodium (low salt), low fat diet;
controlling high blood pressure; exercising as directed by your
physician, and weighing yourself daily to monitor for sudden
weight gain. Being aware of the signs and symptoms of heart
failure and working closely with your physician are your best
defenses in your quest for heart health. For more information

In Memory of Residents who have Passed Away
and Their Loved Ones Who Miss Them, Daily...
As the Director of Pastoral Care I have been graced by the presence of numerous residents who I have
gotten to know through their stories. Whenever anyone shares their life story there is something very
endearing and special about how their story is told and the impact it leaves on its' listener.
Pastoral Care has been blessed to be a part of numerous residents' stories about themselves and their
family members. With the passing of each resident, since being “called” to serve as the chaplain, at
Heritage Village, my ministry has been enriched, immensely. Pastoral Care has been embraced by
residents and their family members in such a way that each resident's death has touched me in a deep
and profound way. Whenever a resident passes away from an illness, natural causes, or various diseases it saddens my heart and spirit. Whether Pastoral Care knew the resident for a short length of
time or for a longer length of time, there is a connection and a bond that is formed. The family members, as well, are a major part of that connection and bond. The raw grief, that family members express
when their loved ones have passed, needs to be attended to with comfort, attentive ears, prayer if
requested, and a compassionate heart. What a “gift and blessing” it has been for Pastoral Care to be a
part of a resident's “journey home.” Pastoral Care is extremely humbled and honored to be present to
our residents, their family members, and our staff at such difficult and sad times when one's death is
eminent. There is a sacredness being at the bedside of someone who is dying. Pastoral Care has been
blessed, in abundance, for being given the privilege and honor to be among residents, family members,
and our staff, who have welcomed Pastoral Care at such vulnerable times in their lives. This
welcoming and this embracing, by a community of such warmth and acceptance, reaffirms a quote
from Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” Pastoral Care's ministry
has been “strengthened” by our residents who have died, their family members and our staff. And for
this, Pastoral Care will be forever grateful…
Chaplain Carole R. DiZeo, Director of Pastoral Care
In future issues of our Campus Newsletter, there will be a tribute in memory and in honor of a resident
who has died and has been “called home” to be with their God.

Each quarter, the Activity Department features a resident’s
favorite recipe in its cooking class. This recipe was submitted by
resident Violet Morse and enjoyed by all. We hope you try it!
Turtle Cake
Ingredients:
1 German chocolate cake mix ( you will need additional ingredients as listed on back of
the cake mix box)
1 (14oz) package of caramels
3/4 cup butter
1/2 cup evaporated milk
1 cup chocolate chips
1 cup chopped pecans (optional)
Mix the cake according to package directions on the box. Pour 1/2 the mixture in the
bottom of a 9 X 13 greased and floured baking dish. Reserve the other half for later.
Bake for 15 minutes at 350 degrees.
In a saucepan over low heat, melt caramels, butter and milk. Remove cake from oven,
pour caramel mixture over the baked cake; top with chocolate chips and pecans. Pour
the reserved half of the cake mixture over the top. Bake for another 20 minutes at 350
degrees.

interactive drawing program. The
artwork of more than 450 students
from preschool age to 8th grade
will be on display for you to
enjoy. Numerous schools in the
area as well as individual participants will be represented. Be sure
to join us for our next exhibit,

Community!
Resident Elaine Quinn shows off her
“pretty peppers.”
Resident Artists
In March, our Gallery hosted
another monthly art class, giving
the residents an opportunity to
express their creativity in colored
pencil! The class, held once a
month and led by gallery artists,
gives the residents a chance to
learn different creative techniques
using a wide range of materials
such as colored pencils, pastels
and graphite.
In March, 15 residents created
their own interpretation of
peppers with colored pencils.
Their masterpieces were on display for visitors to enjoy as well.
In March we hosted another in
our series of visual arts workshops for the community. Local
artist Sharon Taylor joined us and
taught participants the techniques
of basketry. Taylor demonstrated
techniques and also worked sideby-side with participants using
various basket-weaving materials
to create some of the beautiful
baskets you see below!
Tara Altuis enjoys her results!
