Thanks to recent advances in laser and lens implant technology, our highly-trained specialists are helping patients of all ages enjoy the type of clearer, more natural vision they desire. Vision for the way we live here in New England! VISION for our Tooth Whitening: The White Way to Get a Better Smile by Dr. John Madden Your smile is often the first thing someone will notice about you. Tooth whitening is a popular way to improve your smile by making your teeth look much whiter and healthier. It also can give you a more youthful appearance. How Can Tooth Whitening Help Your Smile? Tooth whitening has become increasingly popular. In-office or takehome whitening kits developed by a dentist can be used not only to remove nasty stains from tea, coffee and smoking, but also to whiten the natural underlying shade of the tooth. With very little time and expense, tooth whitening can transform dull, stained teeth into bright, shiny and healthy-looking teeth. What Tooth Whitening Options Are Available? Tooth whitening may be performed in a dental practice, or with a take-home bleaching kit that is custom-made by a dentist for your particular teeth. Depending on your unique needs, a dentist can use different techniques and products to provide the best approach for your situation. Although tooth whitening products also are available in stores, these are not as effective as the whitening techniques available at your dentist. The methods used by a dentist include custom-made trays, which are made to specifically fit your teeth. The whitening products are applied to the trays, which are then worn overnight, or for shorter periods of time. With custom-made trays the whitening product is targeted towards the stains on your teeth and is much less likely to irritate your gums. The custom trays made by your dentist allow a stronger, more effective whitening product to be used, which results in whiter and brighter teeth and fewer side effects to your gums, keeping them healthy as well. What Are the Benefits of Take-Home Kits Versus In-Office Whitening? In-office whitening offers patients results within an hour or so. When done under the supervision of your dentist in a dental office, more effective whitening agents can be safely applied to your teeth to create whiter results in a very short period of time. While take-home bleaching kits supplied by a dentist may take more time to get the result you want than in-office techniques, they also offer an effective way to whiten teeth, and they can be used repeatedly over time to keep your teeth bright and white. Can People with Sensitive Teeth Have Their Teeth Whitened? Many patients with sensitive teeth are still able to achieve a whiter smile using whitening products. Many whitening products contain components that prevent sensitivity from arising, and this is especially true of the high quality whitening products which experienced dentists use. If this is something that concerns you, it is best to discuss this with a dentist to determine the best approach for your situation. Are All Whitening Products and Techniques the Same? No. Just like everything else in life, there are variations in quality, expertise, materials and experience. A highly-skilled dentist will achieve the best result for you and your smile. From our all-laser, bladeless LASIK procedure – to exciting developments like our Visian Implantable lens - our commitment to leading edge technology is surpassed only by our dedication to personalized patient care. Patients of New England Eye Center find confidence in knowing we offer experience you can trust and technology you can rely on. NASA-Approved LASIK - Our all-laser, bladeless LASIK at New England Eye Center has greatly improved results and helped take the fear out of having LASIK. The vast majority of our LASIK and PRK patients now achieve 20/20 vision at distance without glasses or contact lenses. Our method of LASIK is the same type approved for NASA astronauts and military pilots. Heroes Implantable Contact Lens - New England Eye Center is among a select group of practices in the country offering patients the benefits of the Visian Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL). Unlike LASIK, the Visian corrects vision by inserting a delicate intraocular lenslike device atop the eye’s natural lens, which is why the Visian is also referred to as the ‘Implantable Contact Lens.’ All of the refractive surgeons at New England Eye Center are qualified and experienced in performing this brief outpatient procedure to insert the Visian ICL. Because no corneal or other tissue is removed in the Visian ICL procedure, visual recovery is extremely rapid and the ICL can potentially be replaced if the eye’s focus changes over time. To our brave men and women in uniform, your service does not go unseen. At New England Eye Center, we know the risks you take every day require great heart AND great vision. That’s why it’s our honor to present you with our Hero Vision Special. Call us today for more information about our blade-free LASIK and Visian ICL® procedures. Refractive Lens Exchange - If you’re frustrated with reading glasses and bifocals, our refractive specialists perform a procedure known as Refractive Lens Exchange. By replacing your eye’s aging natural lens with a Intraocular Lens Implant customized specifically for your visual needs - and your lifestyle - allowing you to see better, look younger and never have to worry about developing cataracts! ǦȈ̺ Laser Cataract Surgery - For seniors experiencing changes in their vision – or who have been diagnosed with a cataract – New England Eye Center is turning the dream of Laser Cataract Surgery into reality. We are currently among only the top 3% of practices in the country to offer patients the added precision and accuracy of Laser Cataract Surgery using OptiMedica® Catalys™ Precision Laser System. ȁ ȁƤȁ This year, take your vision to the NEXT LEVEL by giving yourself or a loved one the Gift of Sight. Much progress has been made in the prevention and treatment of breast cancer. However, the American Cancer Society reports that 12% of women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer (“What are the key statistics,” 2013). Take a moment this October, Breast Cancer Awareness month, to talk to your doctor about getting screened. A Full-Service Faculty Practice Offering Leading-Edge Dental Care A Mammogram Can Save Your Life A mammogram is a type of x-ray for the breast that is used to test for breast cancer. It is an important tool for early detection, because mammograms can detect tumors that are too small for you or your doctor to feel. Talk to your doctor about your risk factors, what age you should start having mammograms, and how often. Your doctor will advise you based on your age, health, and family history. Keeping All Women Healthy While breast cancer can affect all women, studies show that Black and African American women are screened less often, and are frequently diagnosed at a later, more dangerous stage. Over the years, Neighborhood Health Plan (NHP) has led successful campaigns to eliminate this disparity faced by Black and African American women in some Boston neighborhoods. NHP’s health education campaigns encourage women to talk with their doctors about the right time to start getting annual mammograms. Partnerships Make a Difference Raising awareness about breast health cannot be accomplished by a single organization alone. That is why NHP has partnered with YWCA Boston and DanaFarber Cancer Institute to help inform women about the importance of mammography screening. Every October, these organizations conduct a Breast Health Phone-a-thon, during which volunteers call local women to answer questions and provide education and information about screenings. During the last four years, volunteers have placed over 2,000 calls and reached more than 800 women. Callers also help to arrange screening appointments, using creative resources like Dana-Farber’s Mammography Van that visits different community health centers throughout Boston. This year, volunteers from Dana-Farber will be onsite to schedule appointments at health centers or hospitals that are most convenient for each woman. The Breast Health Phone-athon has been successful in helping women overcome fears and misinformation about mammograms. For instance, you may not know that mammography screening is fully covered by insurance at no cost to you, and you do not need a referral. Community education campaigns like the Breast Health Phone-a-thon have made a big difference, but this work also requires a partnership between doctors and patients. Take care of your health by talking to your doctor about how to reduce your risk for breast cancer. Health Tips for Managing Your Diabetes Living with type 2 diabetes can be challenging, but small changes in your diet and daily routine can make a big impact on your health. Portion control is important when eating healthy, so try to remember the American Diabetes Association’s guidelines: a quarter of your plate should be starch or carbohydrates, another quarter lean protein, and the other half should be filled with a non-starchy vegetable, like broccoli or spinach. Stay Active Being physically active is an important part of managing diabetes. The American Diabetes Association recommends 30 minutes of exercise at least five days a week. But daily physical activity can be as simple as walking with friends or gardening. To get into a routine, join the local gym, or take a dance or exercise class. If you live close to work, consider walking or biking instead of driving. Keep up-to-date with your medications What works for your body today might not work in the future. Diabetes is a progressive disease, so it is important to stay up-to-date with your medications and work with your doctor to manage your blood sugar. Remember that your body has specific needs; there is no one-size-fits-all treatment for diabetes. Finding something this small may save your life.
