to NWI communities

agen Pharmacy just received
the Health Mart Community
Healthcare Excellence Award.
They are one of only 10
pharmacies in the nation to receive
this award for consistently providing care
and services that add measurable value
to patient health care and community
wellness. This award reinforces that the
founding principles are as strong today as
it was with the first store opened by Gerald
A. Fagen, RPh, in 1972.
Melissa Fagen, marketing and media
director for Fagen Pharmacy, as well as the
founder’s daughter, says, “People don’t
realize that it was my dad who started the
business when he was just four years out of
college. After his father died when he was
only 14, he had to go to work to support
his family. He worked for Glen Park Pharmacy, in Gary, Indiana. Because of his time
at work, he was able to observe an independent pharmacy owner and how he took
care of people. That pharmacist became his
mentor. Opportunities can come out of life’s
most difficult times.”
Today, Fagen Pharmacy’s 23 locations
are found throughout Northwest Indiana,
as well as three in Illinois. Taking care of
customers like family is still a part of Gerald
A. Fagen’s founding principle.
The staff at Fagen Pharmacy is the difference, says Fagen.
“We receive heartfelt customer feedback
all the time. We find the right people to
work for us and we are blessed to have a lot
of people who stay with us for many years
once they do. We have some really fantastic
employees, who are passionate about taking
care of people. Seeing so many examples of
genuine loyalty from employees and customers are both humbling and heartwarming.”
Fagen Pharmacy is finalizing the installation of a new state-of-the-art pharmacy
system. The pharmacy will roll out a mobile
refill application when the project is complete. They will also be working on chainwide medication synchronization. Instead
of getting chronic meds on many different
refill dates, the pharmacy will be able to
coordinate them to refill on a single date.
Fagen Pharmacy’s expansion is centered
on need.
“We serve so many patients in nearly a
dozen counties through our hospice contracts. Out of the new healthcare policies, we

now work with hospitals to help cut down
on patient readmissions through our Careful Transitions program. Type 2 Diabetes is
increasing at alarming rates and because of
that, we have been offering Diabetes education on a monthly basis,” says Fagen. The
American Diabetes Association has recognized Fagen Pharmacy’s diabetes education
program for meeting the national standards
they set for diabetes self-management education. By assessing patient medications,
lifestyle, and personal needs in advance,
everyone can have more successful class
sessions and follow-up consultations. For

mission work or have needs based on their
international travel. Not only does the pharmacy offer standard vaccines like flu, shingles and pneumonia, they also offer travel

business serving moms with new babies.
In Valparaiso, the store has gone beyond
offering Medela breast pumps and accessories. They now offer nursing bras by both
