Case of the Month: Banana Roll
Liposuction with Dr. Kelly
"Banana Roll" is a popular, yet
unflattering reference to the excess fat
on the upper back thigh below the
buttocks crease. This is a problem area
for many women and is often a result
of genetics, not body weight. The
banana roll is usually resistant to
exercise and diet.
Liposuction can be performed to
eliminate the stubborn fat and
contour the body for a more shapely
appearance. For this procedure, Dr.
Kelly makes a very small incision right
below the crease of the buttocks and uses a thin canula to
suction the fat out of the area. He is careful when treating
the banana roll area to remove an even amount of fat to
avoid leaving any lumps or bumps.

Only 15 Minutes of Exercise.... Can
Add 3 Years To Your Life!
While it may sound too good to be true, a recent Taiwanese
study indicates that exercising 15 minutes a day not only
enhances or maintains physical fitness and overall health, it
can extend lifespan an average of three years.
The study, which took place over
eight years and included 400,000
participants, compared inactive
people with active people who
engaged in a range of different
levels of physical activity. Individuals
that exercised approximately 92
minutes a week (15 minutes a day),
cut their risk of death by 14%, risk of
death by cancer by 10% AND had
an average three year longer life
expectancy.
While the World Health Organization recommends at least 30
minutes of exercise a day, these results should encourage
those who are having a hard time getting in enough or any
daily exercise.
Something is better than nothing. But more is always better!
Q & A with Dr. Herman
Q: What exactly is MAC
Anesthesia? I always thought
there was just local anesthesia
and general anesthesia.
A: MAC, which stands for
Monitored Anesthesia Care, is a
state of conscious sedation. The
patient receives pain medicine
and sedatives intravenously to
induce relaxation and
drowsiness. However, the patient
is still conscious and capable of
responding to verbal or physical
stimulation. Unlike general
anesthesia, the patient is able to
breathe on their own and does not need a breathing tube.
With MAC, an anesthesiologist is present to monitor vital signs
and administer intravenous medications.
General anesthesia is the deepest form of sedation. The
patient is in a controlled state of unconsciousness where they
won't see, hear, feel or remember anything that happens.
General anesthesia is commonly produced by a
combination of intravenous drugs and inhaled gases. A
breathing tube is used to assist with the patient's breathing.
As with MAC, an anesthesiologist is present to monitor your
breathing as well as your body's vital functions.
I know the thought of anesthesia can be a little scary. To
ensure our patients' safety, we only use board-certified
anesthesiologists to administer anesthesia at MPS. These are
doctors who have completed a minimum of a 4-year
residency in anesthesiology after medical school. They have
also passed board exams and participate in continuing
medical education to stay current on the latest medical
techniques and advances.
