POSITION SUMMARY
Assist Ophthalmologists by performing ophthalmic clinical functions, such as patient work ups and
special testing. May administer eye medications and instruct the patient in care and use of corrective
lenses, apply dressings to eye, as well as assist with in-office lasers and procedures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Essential Functions Statement(s)
 Ensures patient understands all instructions.
 Take and document patients' medical histories.
 Administer topical ophthalmic or oral medications.
 Operate ophthalmic equipment, such as Auto Refractors, Phoropters, Slit Lamp, Keratometers,
Projectors, Tono-Pens, or Retinoscopes.
 Pupil evaluation.
 Pachymetry.
 Goldman and Humphrey Visual Field Testing.
 Conduct tonometry to measure intraocular pressure. (Goldman and Tonopen)
 Measure corneal curvature with keratometers.
 Stereopsis Testing.
 Color vision testing (Ishihara).
 Refractometry minus cylinder utilizing the phoropters.
 Assess refractive conditions of eyes, using retinoscopes.
 Extra-ocular muscle neutralization using cover-uncover tests and alternating cover tests.
 Conduct confrontation visual fields.
 Determine amplitude of accommodation - near point of accommodation (NPA). Schirmer’s tear
test.
 Estimation of anterior chamber depth.
 Brighteness Acuity Test (BAT).
 Worth 4—Dot test.
 Measure and record lens power, using Lensometers.
 Measure visual acuity using appropriate tests, including near, distance, and pinhole.
 Triages phone calls from patients and outside contacts in accordance with the standard of care for
Ophthalmology and office policies.
 Clean or sterilize ophthalmic or surgical instruments.
 Maintain ophthalmic instruments or equipment.
 Maintain and order ophthalmic inventory of supplies.
 Assist physicians in performing ophthalmic procedures, including minor surgery.




Completes various documents and forms such as consent forms, DOL statements, insurance
waivers or surgery scheduling paperwork.
Adjust or make minor repairs to spectacles or eyeglasses.
Assist patients to insert or remove contact lenses.
May be asked to work on projects or complete delegated assignments as needed.

SKILLS & ABILITIES
Education: High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED)
Experience: Two to four years related experience
Computer Skills: Intermediate level in Microsoft Office Suite required, Basic level in NextGen preferred
Certificates & Licenses: Certified Ophthalmic Assistant or Certified Ophthalmic Technician preferred
Other Requirements: American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR/AED, Basic
knowledge of medical coding terminology and convention.
