ON THE DAY OF YOUR EXAM.
P
______ Echocardiogram - An ultrasound picture to determine information about your heart valves
and wall motion of the chambers of the heart. NO PREPARATION. Time: approximately
30 minutes.
______ EEG (Electroencephalogram) - Recording of the electrical activity of the brain.
PREPARATION: 1) Patient should have no more than 4 hours of sleep the night before.
2) Hair should be clean without hair preparations such as sprays, gels, etc.
3) For children under 3, please contact your pediatrician for a prescription
of Noctec to be given one half-hour before the test.
Time: approximately 45 minutes.
Exercise Myocardial Perfusion Imaging Stress Test - Done while walking on a
treadmill or performing arm exercise. This test involves an IV needle being placed in
your hand or arm, for the injection of radioactive isotope. Pictures of the circulation of
blood to the heart muscle are taken before exercise and 1 hour after exercise. Time:
approximately 3.5 hours (including a 1 hour meal break). Please, follow above
preparation for stress testing.
______
Exercise Stress Echo Test - Done by completing ultrasound (echocardiogram studies)
at rest, then walking on a treadmill or performing arm exercise, and followed with
additional echo studies. The comparison of the ultrasound at rest to that after exercise
will help determine any wall motion abnormalities of the heart muscle. Time:
approximately 1 hour. Please, follow above preparation for stress testing.
______
Dobutamine Stress Echo Test - Done while you are at rest. This test involves the
placement of an intravenous needle in your hand or arm for the administration of
Dobutamine, a medication that increases the heart rate. Since you will not be exercising
for this test, Dobutamine will be administered intravenously in gradually increasing
doses to raise your heart rate while your heart is examined through ultrasound
(echocardiogram studies). Time: approximately 1 ½ hours. Please, follow above
preparation for stress testing.
______
Adenosine Myocardial Perfusion Imaging Stress Test - Done without exercise or with
minimal activity. This test involves the placement of an intravenous needle in your hand
or arm for the injection of the Adenosine and radioactive isotope. Adenosine expands
(dilates) the coronary arteries. Comparison pictures of the heart's circulation are taken
before its administration and repeated 1 ½ hours afterwards. Time: approximately 3.5
hours (including a 1 hour meal break). Please, follow above preparation for stress testing
in addition to the following: For 24 hours before your test, avoid all caffeine by not
drinking any coffees, colas, teas, chocolates or any other product that contains caffeine
or decaffeinated substances. Also, do not take any aspirin products that contain caffeine
(such as Anacin and Excedrin). If you take medications for asthma, please check with
your physician to assure test is appropriate. The medications Persantine and other
theophylline or aminophylline containing products (such as Theo-Dur, Slo-Phyllin,
Quibron, Primatene, etc.) should be avoided for 24 hours before your test.
______ EKG (Electrocardiogram) - Recording of the electrical activity of the heart while you are
at rest. NO PREPARATION. Time: approximately 15 minutes.
______ 24 Holter Monitor - 24 hour recording of the activity of the heart. A recorder is worn with
small adhesive patches on the chest. You will keep a general diary of your activities and
associated symptoms. You will return the following day to have the monitor removed. NO
PREPARATION. Time: approximately 20 minutes.
Regular Exercise Stress Test - Done while walking on a treadmill or performing arm
exercise while monitoring your EKG. Time: approximately 1 hour. Please, follow above
preparation for stress testing.
