For us, cancer is personal Guide to having your CADD Pump at home The CADD pump How do I change the battery? An infusion device called ‘Computerised Ambulatory Delivery Device’ or ‘CADD pump’ will allow you to receive your chemotherapy/medications safely and comfortably in your home. Depending on the model of the pump, you will have been given a spare 9 volt battery or 2 AA size batteries with your CADD pump. When the pump’s battery is going flat and requires changing, it will sound an alarm. Follow the instructions below for changing the battery on your pump model. Your nurse will have explained the management of your CADD pump to you. This brochure is designed to give you additional information to ensure that you are able to manage problems should they arise. The pump is light and may be carried in a pouch over your shoulder or around your waist on your belt. You can move around as usual. The pouch also helps protect the pump from damage. Some people wear it under their clothing so it cannot be seen. You will need to make some minor adjustments in your daily activities: • A s water can damage the pump, place it on a stool or chair next to the bath or shower when you shower or bath. • W hen you sleep, the pump may be put under your pillow, on a chair next to the bed or be worn on a loose belt. • Do not play any contact sports. • T he pump may be damaged if hit with a hard object. Protect the pump so it is not dropped or hit. A registered nurse will program the pump to deliver the medication at the exact dose per hour as your doctor has prescribed. The pump is always placed in the lock position so that the program will not be changed by accident or when the battery is being replaced. You will return to the centre to have the pump removed or the cassette changed. These appointment times will be given to you prior to your discharge. Please do not disconnect the tubing at home. How do I know the pump is working? Periodically check the pump to ensure that it is working correctly. Ensure: • t he pump is making a low ‘whirring’ sound – it is operating correctly • t he reservoir volume is gradually decreasing in volume. CADD PLUS Requires a 9 volt battery 1. Stop the pump by holding down the ‘stop/start’ key until three dashes appear on the screen. 2. Slide open the battery door and remove the old battery. 3. Put the new battery in place, ensuring you match the ‘+’ and ‘-’ signs. 4. Restart the pump by holding down the ‘stop/ start’ key until the three dashes disappear from the screen. 5. The pump should commence running through the program and display the ‘RES VOL’ sign in the bottom right-hand corner. When ‘RES VOL’ sign is flashing, the pump is working. CADD PRISM Requires a 9 volt battery 1. Stop the pump by pressing the ‘stop/start’ key. The screen will display ‘Y’ or ‘N’ to stop the pump. Press ‘Y’. 2. ress the button on P the battery door and slide the door forward. Remove the old battery. 3. ut the new battery P in place, ensuring you match the ‘+’ and ‘-’ signs. 4. The pump should commence running through the program and will display ‘RUN’ on screen when working. What problems may I have with the CADD? If you hear a continuous high pitched sound alarm – check the screen for indication of a high pressure warning. Check the tubing to ensure there is no kink in the line and that all the clamps are open. If you hear a beeping sound alarm – check the reservoir volume to see if it is low or empty. Turn the pump off if it is empty and clamp the line. Your appointment at the centre should be within the next two hours. If it is not, please telephone and notify the nursing staff that your pump is empty. What do I need to know I have a port-a-cath? A needle has been inserted into your port-a-cath to allow you to have your treatment at home via a pump. The needle area will be covered with a waterproof dressing to permit you to bath/shower and to keep the area dry. Check the position of the port-a-cath needle at regular intervals to ensure that it remains in the porta-cath and that the dressing remains undisturbed. A registered nurse is ‘on call’ 24 hours/day to respond to any difficulties you may have with your CADD pump. I have a PICC? Your PICC is attached to the pump to allow you to have your treatment at home. The area where the PICC exits the skin is covered by a waterproof dressing to allow you to bath/shower and to keep the area dry. Check the dressing at regular intervals to ensure that it remains undisturbed and that the PICC is not kinked. I have a Hickman Catheter? Your Hickman Catheter is connected to the pump to allow you to have your treatment at home. The area where the catheter exits the skin may be covered by a waterproof dressing to allow you to bath/shower and to keep the area dry. The length of time your catheter has been in place will determine whether or not you require a waterproof dressing over the exit site. Check the dressing at regular intervals to ensure that it remains undisturbed. When should I contact the Icon On-Call Nurse? A registered nurse is ‘on call’ 24 hours/day to respond to any difficulties you may have with your CADD pump. Please contact the centre or the ‘on call’ nurse should the troubleshooting suggestions fail or if you experience any other problems or concerns, including: • lifting of waterproof dressing • change in needle position • v isible ooze and/or swelling under the waterproof dressing • p ain where the needle is placed into the port-a-cath • a ny leakage from the tubing connecting the pump • pump alarms despite your troubleshooting.
