Learning Objective: The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery strives to assist cosmetic surgeons and patients in maximizing the efficacy and safety of liposuction surgery. At the completion of this conference, participants should gain a greater understanding of the basic fundamentals, as well as the more advanced applications of liposuction – from pure tumescent liposuction to the latest in automated liposuction instrumentation. Throughout the conference, emphasis will be placed on maximizing aesthetic results and minimizing untoward outcomes. Participants will have the opportunity to learn the advantages, disadvantages and limitations of virtually all surgical options available in the rapidly advancing field of liposuction and lipotransfer presented by a multidisciplinary group of experts. Participant Profile: This course is appropriate for cosmetic surgeons of all skill levels. The ideal meeting participant will have an active interest in liposuction surgery and a personal commitment to patient safety and satisfaction. Needs Assessment: Liposuction is one of the most frequently requested cosmetic procedures. Perhaps more than any other cosmetic procedure, liposuction has advanced rapidly and techniques are still evolving and undergoing refinement. Safety concerns about techniques of liposuction make it imperative that the cosmetic surgeon be well informed about the latest scientific developments and advances in the field. Dear Attendees, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 2004 Welcome to the 2004 World Congress on Liposuction Surgery in St. Louis, Missouri, the gateway to the West! The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery is pleased to sponsor this biennial event, which honors not only such accomplished surgeons as Giorgio Fischer, MD, presenter of the 2004 Garry Fenno Memorial Lecture, but other cosmetic greats including Alberto DiGiuseppe, MD, Doris Hexsel, MD, Ali Sajjadian, MD and Kacey Marra, Ph.D. 4:00 – 7:00 pm Just some of the exciting topics to be covered at this meeting include the latest advances in fat transfer, aesthetic planning in facial fat grafting, subcision in the treatment of cellulite, body lift surgery and the reduction of serious adverse effects in liposuction. There will also be numerous opportunities for additional learning at panel discussions and question and answer sessions. Furthermore, the Academy will offer a very special ticketed event, "Dinner with the Faculty," for those who wish to attend. We invite you and your colleagues to join us for what we believe will be our finest liposuction meeting to date. Throughout his many years of innovation, Dr. Fischer has exemplified the spirit of the Garry Fenno Memorial Lecture. In addition to the Garry Fenno Memorial Lecture, Dr. Fischer is an honored guest and a featured speaker at this year's World Congress. The Garry Fenno Memorial Lecture was established to honor the late Garry Fenno, MD, and acknowledge individuals who have made substantial contributions to the field of cosmetic surgery, specifically liposuction surgery. Dr. Fischer, who received his medical degree from the University La Sapienza, Rome, Italy, has been surrounded by cosmetic surgery and the quest for beauty his entire life. His father, Dr. Arpad Fischer, was the first surgeon to practice cosmetic surgery in Italy after being granted permission by the Vatican in 1956. Father and son later went on to invent the procedure known today as liposculpture and in 1975, introduced it to the world with much fanfare in Paris, France. In 1986, Dr. Fischer founded the Societa Italiana di Liposcultura and in 1992, he designed the first operating table for orthostatic liposculpture. In addition to his busy private practice, Dr. Fischer continues to author papers and travel the world speaking about cosmetic surgery. ALBERTO DIGIUSEPPE, MD "Vaser Ultrasound-Assisted Lipoplasty: Evolution of a Technique in 12 Years of History" With more than 2,000 clinical cases of ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty to his record and more than 250 papers published in national and international journals, such as the Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Journal and Plastic & Reconstructive Journal, the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery is truly honored to welcome Dr. Alberto DiGiuseppe. After completing his training in plastic surgery at East Grinstead and Mount Vernon Hospital in England, Dr. DiGiuseppe trained in the United States in microsurgery. In addition to his demanding private practice schedule, he is an Assistant Clinical Professor in Plastic Surgery at the University of Ancona, Italy, a Professor at the Lipoplasty University in Austin, Texas, and an Associate Professor of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Oradea, Romania. Dr. DiGiuseppe also sits on the editorial board of the International Journal of Dermatology and Aesthetic Surgery. He is board-certified in both plastic surgery and oral maxillofacial surgery and is a member of the European Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. DORIS HEXSEL, MD "Treatment of Small Areas of Localized Fat with Phosphatidylcholine Injections" 7:00 – 8:00 am 3:30 pm Presented by the Cosmetic Surgery Foundation Dr. Doris Hexsel is well-known for her contributions to cosmetic dermatology in her native Brazil and around the world. Dr. Hexsel graduated from the School of Medicine at the University of Passo Fundo, Brazil, where she is now a Professor of Dermatology. She is active in the Brazilian Society of Dermatology, serving as Past-President of a chapter and currently as Coordinator of the Cosmetic Dermatology Department. Dedicated to sharing her research, Dr. Hexsel has been published in international scientific journals, including the International Journal of Dermatology, Dermatologic Surgery, Cosmetic Dermatology and the Journal of Ophthalmology. She has authored chapters in twenty-eight books and is the editor of Cosmetic Use of Botulinum Toxin and Botulinum Toxin and Hyperhydrosis, published in the United States and Brazil. KACEY MARRA, Ph.D. "The Potential of Using Lipo-Derived Stem Cells for Bone and Cartilage Regeneration" Kacey Marra, Ph.D., is recognized for her interdisciplinary research in the design, synthesis, characterization and assessment of polymeric biomaterials. Marra is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. Prior to that, she was a Research Scientist at the Institute for Complex Engineered Systems (ICES) and an Associated Faculty Member in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and the Department of Materials Science Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. From 1996-97, Marra was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, Georgia, where she worked on the synthesis of novel synthetic blood vessels. She is actively involved in research efforts investigating polymeric biomaterials for tissue engineering applications. Marra is the Director of the Plastic Surgery Research Laboratory at the University of Pittsburgh, where her research focuses on utilizing adipose-derived stem cells for neuronal tissue engineering applications. Her additional projects examine the use of adult stem cells for cartilage, fat and bone regeneration. As a faculty member of the Bone Tissue Engineering Center (BTEC) at Carnegie Mellon, she conducted studies related to polymer and ceramic scaffolds, and remains a member of BTEC. ALI SAJJADIAN, MD "Latest Advances in Fat Culture" Dr. Ali Sajjadian is an academic leader in the field of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of South Florida/Tampa and went on to receive his medical degree from MCP-Hahnemann University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After spending residencies in general surgery and otolaryngology at Temple University, Philadelphia, he completed a fellowship in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery and became a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Otolaryngology at Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Sajjadian has received numerous honors and awards for his innovative and valuable research in areas such as temporal bone dissection and the use of thigh adductor muscle flap and morphogenic bone proteins in the formation of new bone. Dr. Sajjadian has been published in scientific journals and given research presentations across the disciplines of otolaryngology, dermatology and aesthetic and reconstructive facial plastic surgery. In addition to his original research projects and presentations, Dr. Sajjadian is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. 7 M E E T I N G I N F O R M A T I O N P O L I C I E S ACCREDITATION STATEMENT The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education (CME) for physicians. AACS takes responsibility for the content, quality and scientific integrity of this CME activity. AACS: CREATING PATHWAYS TO LEARNING AACS believes it is important to incorporate several different learning methods to complete the educational process. Certainly, didactic lectures with questions and answers, such as those found during general sessions, are important. The sharing of experiences from colleagues is invaluable, but is not sufficient for a total learning experience. Concentrated learning sessions provided in our instruction courses are another very important facet of the process, allowing individuals quality time with one or more experts. The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery designates these continuing medical education opportunities to meet the criteria for hour-for-hour credit in Category 1 of the Physician’s Recognition Award of the American Medical Association. (See the CME statement at the beginning of each program for the maximum number of hours available.) CLAIMING CREDIT When you pick-up your badge, you will be given a packet containing your CME tracking card. On this card, you should track your actual hours of attendance for each day of the meeting. You then keep this tracking card in your personal files as the actual hours of CME credit you earned for the meeting. Appropriate credit for attendance should be ascertained and reported by each individual physician to the particular state or medical society to which he or she belongs. No surgical learning process, however, is complete without a workshop setting that incorporates focused lectures with demonstrations, and if possible, either simulated or actual hands-on experience. VERIFICATION OF ATTENDANCE You will receive evaluation forms for all sessions at the meeting. Please fill out the forms completely and deposit them in the collection box at the Registration Desk. Upon receipt of your completed session evaluation form at the conclusion of the meeting, the Academy will send you a certificate of attendance for the meeting and the number of CME hours reported. This should also be kept in your personal records. You are responsible for tracking all CME credits earned. Whether it is an established technique or one still unfolding, the learning process must be thorough and multi-faceted. The Academy urges each surgeon to be responsible for seeking out a complete pathway to training, prior to incorporating any technique into his/her practice. Patient safety and satisfaction can only be achieved through a commitment to comprehensive physician education and learning. AACS Headquarters must receive all advance registrations and payments by this date. This deadline allows us to adequately plan for and confirm your participation. All attendees are strongly encouraged to register in advance for the meeting as space is limited and registration will be granted on a first-paid basis only. ACADEMY SCHEDULE OF EVENTS After September 1, 2004 and On-Site: Should you decide to register after September 1st, it will be considered an on-site registration and an additional $100 will be added to each attendee registration fee, regardless of the original date of receipt of the registration packet. Furthermore, it may not be possible for AACS Headquarters to confirm your registration after this date. This could add to your registration time on-site. AACS 21st Annual Scientific Meeting The Art & Science of Cosmetic Surgery: Past, Present & Future The Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego, California USA Claude H. Crockett, Jr., MD Patrick G. McMenamin, MD CONFIRMATIONS Each attendee registered in advance will receive a confirmation of registration from AACS Headquarters. Please bring a copy of your registration confirmation letter to on-site registration to speed up the process. If you do not have a confirmation letter and there is no record payment receipt by AACS Headquarters, you will be required to provide payment on-site, even if you think a payment was remitted previously. Any resulting duplicate payments will be resolved following the meeting. SPOUSES AND GUESTS It is always the Academy’s pleasure to welcome the spouses and families of meeting registrants. However, each guest is required to purchase a special badge to participate in any event. Cost of the badge is solely to defray meal and beverage expenses. Please also note that spouses and guests are not admitted to the educational program meetings as seating is limited and reserved for the paid meeting registrants. To ensure fairness for those paying the appropriate registration fees, any spouse or companion wishing to attend any sessions must register as a surgical assistant/ancillary provider, provided he/she is not currently a practicing physician. Practicing physicians must register as nonmember guest physicians. A spouse/companion badge will not be sufficient for entry into the session rooms. The Academy thanks everyone in advance for his/her cooperation in this matter. ON-SITE REGISTRATION & BADGE PICK-UP The AACS Registration Desk will be located in The Ritz-Carlton Ballroom Foyer. Please keep in mind that on-site registration can be time consuming. Everyone is strongly encouraged to register prior to the September 1st deadline to avoid delays, filled courses and having to pay a higher registration fee. You are reminded to bring your confirmation letter when you pick-up your badge and meeting materials – if you do not have a confirmation letter, we do not know that you are registered! We recommend that attendees allow sufficient time to pick-up their badges prior to the meeting to avoid the last minute lines that may result in a missed session.
