3. Estimation and Testing
(a) Estimation methods and confidence interval
(b) Testing: population mean, comparing two means
(c) Testing: proportion
(d) Large sample testing and small sample testing (if we have enough time)

Objectives of the Course
• To learn how to interpret statistical summaries appearing in newspaper reports, internet, ......
• To learn how to interpret and analyze data arising in your own work (course work and research)
• To lear about the concept of probability and probabilistic reasoning
Recommended Textbooks
• A first course in Statistics – 11th edition by McClave and Sincich
• Introduction to Probability and Statistics – by Mendenhall, Beaver and Beaver
[Note] You can take those textbooks as references. Lecture notes will be provided on the course website.
Homework will be posted online in the form of pdf files.

Quiz – 25%

• [Quiz] No make-up quiz will be given.
Open book. Four quiz will be held on 6/26, 7/3, 7/17, 7/24, during the last 30 mins of the
discussion. Two discussions will be given slightly different versions of problems.
• [Midterm] No make-up exams will be given.
The midterm exam will be held in class on Wednesday, July 9th. Closed book, with each student
permitted to bring one one-sided note (letter). Full details will be given in class.
• [Final] Wednesday, July 30th in class. Closed book, with each student permitted to bring one
double-sided note (letter). Full details will be given in class.
• [Homework] There will be weekly homeworks for the class. All students are strongly encouraged
to complete the homework. Homeworks do not need to turned in and will not be graded.
Conflicts and Accommodations
• Those students requiring extra time and/or accommodations during the course, and for exams,
should contact the instructor seven days before the exam.
• If you are unable to attend an exam because of unavoidable conflicts please contact the instructor
no less than 14 days before the date of the conflict. For emergencies occurring within this period,
please contact the instructor as soon as possible. In either case, no exceptions can be guaranteed
and decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.
