You familiarize yourself with two major semiotic approaches to the study of signs, namely "social semiotics" and the analysis of "semiotic landscapes". You understand how to apply these approaches to analyse multimodal communication (for example, tutorial videos on youtube, fan art on tumblr) or signs in specific spatial settings (for example, multilingualism in Vaasa, city walks, guerilla marketing, grafitties). CONTENT OF THE COURSE Sign conceptions, language, its structure and its functioning, verbal and non-verbal communication in different media, multimodality, social semiotics and semiotic landscapes.
