SANCTUARY & SUSTENANCE
Sanctuary & Sustenance: The Story of Many Journeys, a multimedia projection of
photography, film, music, and words, launched on June 20, 2013 in honor of World Refugee
Day in cities around the world. The installation was projected on the facades of community
centers, churches, mosques, synagogues, temples and other places of worship that have
historically opened their doors as places of welcome and shelter. Collaborators include Lynsey
Addario, Marcus Bleasdale, Paula Bronstein, Helene Caux, Jean Chung, Ron Haviv, David
Hogsholt, Giulio di Sturco, and James Whitlow Delano. Sanctuary & Sustenance was directed
by filmmakers Leslie Thomas and Maren Wickwire and features music by the Argentine
classical composer Osvaldo Noé Golijov. Additional music is by Lee Maddeford, Jonathan
Wiest, and Ventanas.
Through photographs, moving graphics, and music, viewers have an opportunity to trace the
journey of a family during the catastrophic events of displacement, on a path to sanctuary, and
through the long process of rebuilding life in a new community. Sanctuary & Sustenance aims
to raise the public consciousness of these issues to a wide variety of people, and spark
conversations about our collective responsibility to welcome refugees and encourage policy
makers to act in favor of fundamental human rights for refugees and asylum seekers.
2015 OPPORTUNITIES
We are excited to announce an opportunity to create a public dialogue in communities this year
about the global journeys taken by refugees. We can assist local staff in the support of public
projections of Sanctuary & Sustenance and in creating an accompanying workshop and photo
exhibition documenting the lives of local refugee populations.
We are currently working to identify partners in the US and abroad who would like to co-present
the projections and exhibitions featuring local refugee groups. Our organization and other
partners can coordinate the local photography and provide the multi-media exhibition at no cost.
We can also coordinate the technical logistics involved. Typically, a co-presentation by a cultural
venue, local refugee focused resettlement and/or advocacy group, and ART WORKS Projects
creates a strong impact for the community and ensures that the project best supports resettled
populations.
Costs for projections vary widely depending on equipment available and ART WORKS can
research and identify any costs to assist in confirming whether local partners have the capacity
to participate.
