Performers: Ivi Papathanasiou, cello Ivi Papathanasiou studied cello in Thessaloniki (State Conservatory of Thessaloniki with D. Patras) and in London (Trinity College of Music with D. Aviss, Master in performance from University of London) and musicology in Thessaloniki (School of Music, Aristotle University). She has performed as soloist and participated in classical or contemporary music chamber ensembles. She is a member of the Athens State Orchestra since 2001. Kostas Chardas, piano Kostas Chardas studied piano in Athens (Athenean Conservatory) & London (Trinity College of Music and University of London) and musicology in Thessaloniki (BA, Aristotle University) & Surrey (PhD, University of Surrey). He is active both as a performing artist (concert pianist) and as a musicologist (lecturer of music theory and analysis at the School of Music Studies, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki). Odysseas Karydis, clarinet Born in Corfu. Studied clarinet in Athens (with Th. Kardamis) & Thessaloniki (with Ov. Caplescu and A. Oct. Popa) and music theory/composition at the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki. He has performed as soloist with major Greek orchestras and participated in contemporary and classical music ensembles. He is a member of the Municipal Symphony Orchestra of Thessaloniki since 1993. Fani Karagianni, piano Born in Larissa. Studied piano in Larissa (with L. Rizou) and Thessaloniki (with Chr. Fressinier) and musicology in Thessaloniki (School of Music, Aristotle University). Has performed as soloist and as member of music ensembles in Greece and Europe and has frequently made first performances of contemporary Greek piano works. She teaches at the Philippos Nakas Conservatory of Thessaloniki. IDÉE FIXE ENSEMBLE IDÉE FIXE was founded in 2004, based on a core formation of soloists specializing in new music, and shaping a flexible musical ensemble of any needed size. The ensemble's artistic goal is the dissemination of contemporary music creation of the 20th & 21st century, focusing on the blending of the arts (music and dance, music and literature) and the promotion of works by Greek composers. PLEIADES The female polyphonic group “Pleiades” was founded in May 2006 in Thessaloniki, in order to contribute to the diffusion of the Greek-­‐speaking folk polyphonic singing. The members of “Pleiades” have accumulated considerable experience in studying and performing folk music and have performed in Greece and abroad. As “Pleiades” they have collaborated with important contemporary artists aiming to explore the connection between oral tradition of polyphonic songs and neoteric ways of musical expression. Studied in Berlin with Paul Juon and Kurt Weill. Almost all of his output is based on the harmonization and elaboration of Greek folk tunes. He also made a remarkable career as a composer of popular songs, using the pseudoname Costas Yannidis. Nikos Skalkottas (1904-­‐1949) Foremost pioneer of Greek musical modernism. Distinguished student of Arnold Schoenberg at the Berlin Music Academy (1927-­‐1931). Composed nearly 170 atonal and tonal works (solo, chamber, orchestral, stage), of which he heard very few, due to his premature death. Yannis A. Papaioannou (1910-­‐1989) Central figure of Greek musical modernism. Mainly self-­‐taught composer, with a creative career spanning over sixty years and encompassing all major 20th-­‐century creative influences in his output of over 220 works. Also, an important teacher of many generations of Greek composers. Theodore Antoniou (b. 1935) Studied with Yannis Papaioannou in Athens and and G. Bialas and A. Mennerich in Munich. Has been professor of composition at USA Universities (Philadelphia, Boston) for 40 years and winner of numerous prizes and honors. He has composed more than 400 works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, solo and stage. Chair of the Greek Composers' Union. George Couroupos (b. 1942) One of Olivier Messiaen's prominent students at the Paris Conservatiore (1st prize in composition, 1972). His main output are stage works, but has also composed songs and works for orchestral or chamber ensembles. He has often been inspired by ancient Greek themes. Has been professor of composition at the School of Music of the Ionian University. Christos Samaras (b. 1956) Studied composition in Germany (Berlin Musikhochschule) and Austria (Vienna Music Academy) with Erich Urbanner, Friedrich Cerha, Isang Yun. He has composed more than 100 instrumental or vocal works. His recent works feature neotonal and neoromantic elements. Professor of composition at the School of Music of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Michalis Lapidakis (b. 1960) Studied at Berlin Musikhochschule, Boston University (MM) and Northwestern University (DMA) with T. Antoniou, A. Stout, P. Boulez, I. Xenakis, et al. He has composed works for orchestra, various chamber ensembles and solo performers. Associate professor of composition at the School of Music of the Aristotle University of Thesaloniki. Costas Tsougras (b. 1966) Studied composition and musicology/music theory in Thessaloniki and New York with Christos Samaras, Demetre Yannou, Fred Lerdahl, et al. Assistant professor of music theory and analysis at the School of Music of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
